Autumn Decorating Alternatives: Bright Quilt Designs

Updated on March 12, 2016

Before she became a fulltime quilt artist/tutor, Jan T Urquhart Baillie worked as an interior decorator for a wallpaper specialist.

Autumn evokes those gorgeous leaf colours: red-golds, golds, tans ...

And if you live in a climate where the leaves don't change colour, what then? Why not decorate with autumn leaves of a different colour?

Let me show you what Autumn (Fall) looks like if you you use accessories in other scrumptious colours for a Fall/Autumn theme. (Or a Spring theme.)

The picture is a traditional patchwork block called Autumn Leaf, painted in Electric Quilt with fabrics in traditional autumn colours.

Autumn in other climes

There are many,Doesn't have the red-golds, golden browns and leaf fall colours of colder areas.

I lived for several years in the sub-tropical climate of Brisbane, Australia.

Autumn was a non-event there, because to have deciduous shrubs and trees, you need the colder temperatures that occur in temperate zones.

The light is brighter in sub-tropical and tropical zones, so the colours and fabrics used in decor need to be brighter, too.

There are many, many brightly coloured fabrics, pillows (cushions), tableware, glassware and other accessories to enhance your autumn (fall) decorating theme.

You don't have to live in subtropical Brisbane to decorate with this style.

Give it a try.

Design:

Let's decorate a dining room with brights

for a tropical Autumn theme

Start with a focus object, such as the patchwork table runner below.

Find accessories that contrast or complement the runner. You could have tablecloth, table skirt, napkins, placemats, vases, candles, plates, cutlery, serving platters and bowls.

The walls could get a fresh coat of paint to go with the bright new room design, too.

Use a lap-size patchwork quilt for decorating a table

Place it diagonally on top of a table covered with a long skirt in a contrasting colour, like this setting in my loungeroom at Tenambit.

The effect is very pleasing.

These are beautiful designs. Somehow, I have to figure out how to get this software. I've heard too much about it. Plus your combination of accents, I have a new design for my dining room now!
