My Grandmother's Garden
Floral beauty and diversity in my grandmother's garden
My grandmother's garden is one of those that are described in fairy tales; beautiful and mysterious. In the summer it is bursting with colors and the scent of flowers is sweet and almost overwhelming.
While my grandmother tends to her flowers and garden religiously, she has never felt the need for conformity and strict order. So flowers grow wild between each other, spreading joyfully through the garden like a trail of happiness, enhancing the beauty of the neighbouring flowers, rather than suffocating them.
Entering the garden is like diving into a calming ocean comprised of beauty and fragrance. It is almost like time stands still when wandering around the garden paths. Like time has forgotten about this small space on earth and leaves you be just for a little while.
As a kid you would walk along the many narrow paths between the flower beds, letting the smell and the flowers hide you from the grown ups and the outside world. Still while walking the garden to this day I am taken back to my childhoods fairy tale worlds and I am capable of forgetting the stress and demands put on me by grown up responsibilities.
My grandmother's garden is a place of peace and serenity, that soothes the soul. Please join me on a virtual walk through this magical flowery kingdom.

A Garden built for Love

Technically the garden belongs of course to both of my grandparents, but it has always been the joy and pride of my grandmother and as such I refer to it as hers.
My granddad built the house himself back in the 1950th and the big garden is his love gift for my grandmother, just as the many hours he has toiled in it weeding, digging and sowing is a testament to his dedication to her and shows that after more than 60 years of marriage he still loves her deeply.
Blue Bell Flowers

My favourite flower in the entire garden are these tinkerbell flowers. As a kid I always imagined fairies wearing the flowers as hats.
Wood and Flower contrast

The contrast between the grey wooden bords and the splash of green and pink from the crawling flower always manages to get my heart beating faster.
There is something inherently beautiful about the way the two contrasting visuals work together.
White Flower Blanket

The white flowers covers a big area in the garden and when looking at them I always feel like laying down for a rest and let their white heads and green leaves cover me.
They look so soft and inviting and the only reason I haven't done so yet is because it would be a shame to crush these beautiful, delicate little flowers.
Mixed Pink Flowers

My grandmother never told me what her favourite color was, but judging from her garden it may just be pink. There are a lot of different pink flowers, in all hues and variations, mixing in between each other to display almost the entire pink color scale.
The tall pink flower in the middle is a Columbine flower. It comes in many other colors, such at red, blue and purple.
A Splash of Yellow

While pink may be the dominant color in my grandmother's garden, there are plenty of flowers that are not adhering to this trend.
When taking in the sight of the garden you will suddenly be surprised to see a splash of red, yellow, blue or purple.

Pink Foxglove Flowers in Sunlight

Like most gardens my grandmother's is most beautiful in sunshine. Especially in the warm summer days when the light plays in the leaves of the trees and ads and extra element of mystery to the many fragrant flowers.
Simple Purple Flowers

Sometimes beauty is in simplicity. These small purple flowers with the green grass in the background comes across as fantastic as many of the more extravagant flowers.
Pink Flowers En Masse

There might not be a single type of pink flower that grows in scandinavian climate, which is not present in my grandmother's garden. Here is another couple of rosa and pink flowers variations.
Forest Strawberries

What is a garden without fruit and vegetables? The entire back of my grandmother's garden is dedicated to growing fruit and vegetables, but throughout the garden you can also find Forest Strawberry bushes. As a kid foraging for these wonderful berries was an adventure in itself. I still get excited when I spot a deliciously red mini strawberry between the many colorful flowers.
Magical Garden Treehouse

When I was a child my granddad decided that he needed a toolshed in the garden. But like the amazing granddad he is, he thought about his grandchildren as well and built a room on top of the shed that could be used as a secret hideout for all of us kids.
He even engineered a hoist which functioned fantastically to bring up the picnic baskets full of cookies, fruit and sweets that my grandmother would bring out for us when we were camping in the tree house.
The tree house was the castle in my grandmother's magical garden and even though it is not as new and shiny as it was when first built, to me it is still one of the most amazing buildings in the world.
