Top Decorating Ideas for Teen Girls

Updated on January 31, 2015

Decorating for a Teen Girl on a Budget

Teenagers spend most of their time in their rooms. It's their little oasis away from the pressures of high school and teen drama. Because of this, they spend a lot of time and effort making their room just how they want it.

There's so many options out there for decorating a teen girl's bedroom. Often, adding some bright throw pillows, a cute rug, or a new colorful bedspread can make all the difference in brightening up a room. There are also tons of great storage ideas for helping teenagers keep their things organized.

I've collected decorating ideas for your teen daughter to get you started so that you don't have to spend time looking through pages of items. Remember, that redecorating doesn't always have to be a big deal. A few well chosen items can make your teen girl feel like she has a whole new room.

Wall Decorations

One of my favorite ways to change a room is to decorate the walls. The possibilities are endless depending on what your tastes are. One nice aspect of sets of wall art is that you can change the set up and design any way you want, even splitting it between different areas of the room. They're also easy to put up or take down whenever you choose.

Pink is a traditional color for a girl's room. These cute flowers work great as a pink accent, especially if your walls are actually a different color like purple or blue. They'll add some pop and color to your personal space.

It's so important to keep girls' self esteem up. Too often young girls are told they aren't beautiful if they don't fit in with traditional society. Remind yourself that you're beautiful just the way you are with this pretty wall accent.

Throw Rugs for Teen Girls

Throw rugs are such an easy way to make your teen girl's room more vibrant and homey. They brighten up any space and can help pull the theme of a room together. There's tons of styles to suit any preferences and can be changed at any time. As an added bonus, they're usually pretty cheap, especially for what they add to the room. Here's some cute throw rugs that will appeal to your teen daughter.

The heart shape of this rug will make the room more unique and fun. As an added bonus, it's soft and fluffy so it's a great place to curl up on.

Teen Girl Bed Spreads

While bed spreads can be a tad pricey depending on your budget, they are still a much cheaper option than a full renovation and can make a vast impact on the look and feel of a room. They can tie a theme together or compliment the style of the rest of the décor. These teen girl bed spreads are colourful and unique; they're a sure fire way to give your daughter's room a whole new look at a fraction of the normal redecorating cost.

Storage Bed - Clear away the clutter!

Teens tend to accumulate a lot of stuff and there's really nowhere for them to put it except their bedroom. A storage bed is a fantastic way to clear up some of the clutter without having to get rid of treasured items. I got one in university and it was one of the best buys ever. It made keeping my things organized a lot easier. If your teen doesn't have a lot of space, consider buying them a bed that includes storage.

Pillows - Make the room cozy

Throw pillows are a fantastic way to spruce up your teen girl's room and add some flavour. The variety is endless, including some really funky options, and the best part is, they're practical and will fit pretty much any budget! On top of that, throw pillows are easy to change out, so your teen can put one aside for a while and bring it back out when the mood strikes. They're also great for late night studying sessions or curling up for a long phone conversation.

Starting with a Clean Base

This video talks about starting with a clean base (white furniture) and building up from there based on your teen's personality and style. It gives some great ideas!

Lamps for a Teen Girl's Room - Funky Accessories

Everyone knows teens tend to stay up late. Some even consider natural daylight to be their enemy. Try some of these lamps to brighten your teen girl's room. They're great for atmosphere or late night studying sessions. They're also perfect for dorm rooms if your daughter is moving off to college.

Additionally, lamps are fantastic for those long grey days in winter (or any season, really). I know I get a little down in the winter when there is nothing but grey and sometimes turning on all the lamps in my apartment makes me feel a lot better. And it's even better if I can turn on a cute, unique lamp. This is just a small collection of possible lamps to add to your teen girl's room (or your own room!)

With flexible heads to give you control of how much light shines where, this is the perfect floor lamp for any room. The multi colored heads make it a great way to brighten up your space and means they will match almost any decor.

Do it Yourself

If you're looking for a lower maintenance way to redecorate your teen girl's bedroom, get her involved! Have her pick out her favourite paint colour, then help her move all the furniture into the centre of the room. After that, she can invite a couple of friends over to help her paint the walls. It lets you out of the nitty gritty of the work and gives her more ownership over her room.

Storage Drawers are Great for Teens

Storage is vital in a teenager's bedroom. Not only does it help keep their room clean, it teaches them organizational skills. Whether at home still or off to college, storage drawers are a fantastic and cheap way to keep a teen's things organized instead of strewn around the room. They're great for kids, too, or even adults. They're especially handy if you have a craft or sewing space you want to keep clean. These funky, colourful storage drawers are a great way to help your teen keep their things organized and add some spice to their room.

Cozy Chairs for a Teen's Room

If your teen girl's room is big enough, a unique, cozy chair can be a great addition! Even if the room is smaller, there are chairs that are small or fold up for when more space is needed. There are some really funky options available that are sure to suit any teen girl's taste.

Colour Schemes - What to choose?

This video discusses how to choose a colour for your teen's bedroom. It gives ideas for both boys and girls and suggests a few decorating ideas once you've chosen a base colour.

Decorating with a Theme

A bit of a twist

If you're really ambitious, you could always try decorating with a theme. Just a few examples are jungle, seaside, and retro. Or you could try a specific colour. It's amazing what you can find to decorate a room, including animal lamps and chairs. All it takes is choosing a few of these furniture pieces, finding a matching bedspread, and adding some colourful photos. If you've got the time and there is something you're passionate about, you should give ita try!
