    It goes under the eves of the roof line to vent and create air flow.  Usually made of vinyl.

    Right, and the eve is the overhand all around your house. It usually has little holes in it. (Which allows your attic to breathe)

    To make sure I'm giving you an accurate answer, I checked with my husband who holds a Class A contractor's license. He says a soffit is the area just under the overhang on most roofs. Building terminology will vary from region to region so some people might call a soffit an eave.
