I just snap Christmas cactus off at the junctures where the segments meet. Sometimes, I'll stick the broken-off pieces into the pot in order to start new plants or stick them in water for the same reason. Little roots usually jut out where the segments meet, making the plant really easy to propagate. Good luck with your pruning!

If you find you need to prune, break of at join in leaves, this can be used to propogate new plants, just put in some water and roots will soon grow. Its best to do this after the cactus has flowered.
