My little garden in my urban space
Currently, the world population thought to be living in the urban areas is about 55% and the figure is expected to reach 68% over the coming decades. It is estimated that by the year 2050 more than two thirds of the world population will be living in the world cities/towns. This could sound very worrying considering the fact that land is not increasing in size. So if you are wondering how farming will happen or if it will even happen, I may have some answers to that.
We all know that we depend on agriculture for food. In the many years we have also known that most of the agriculture work was done in the big farms in the rural areas with the urban population being just the consumers but never the producers. Another argument would be that most people are living in rented places where the restrictions about using a garden are too tough, or the people living there are too many to allow for any kind of farming or even the type of housing may not allow any space for any farming. Sometimes we may also be limited by our thinking that only soils can serve as a growing material for our crops and that also could lead to so many people believing they can do no farming in their small urban spaces.
I would like to introduce a crop by crop series whereby we will discuss the valuable crops you can grow even on your apartment balcony without even having to use any soil, without having crazy management requirements and some have opportunities of becoming sources of income by selling fresh produce to your neighbors a well. We will have a look at a wide variety of crops including herbs, mushrooms, legumes and many more in my next articles.
