Gardening in Winter: How To Make Your Garden Grow in Winter

Updated on August 11, 2012

Gardening in Winter

Gardening in winter can be a tricky job. Winter is not the best season for your beloved flora. Most plants are sensitive to harsh cold temperatures in winter. But with some simple precautions you can keep your garden ever fresh and flourishing in winter as well. These are some simple gardening tips for winter.

Protect Your Plants in Winter

When winter rolls arrives, it’s natural to feel a worry about losing your precious flora to the harsh weather and merciless cold, but you should not just sit back and watch the destruction. There are plenty of ways you can protect your plants in winters and even better, keep them just as delighted as summer.

Bring Tender Plants Inside

Tender plants are very delicate to cold weather. They will die if their roots are locked in cold, wet soil in winter. The best way to protect them is to bring them inside a mildly heated greenhouse and water them occasionally.

Wrap up your pots

Many pots are not made to withstand the freezing temperatures. These pots need protection in winter. Secure them by wrapping these pots in burlap.

Keep tender plants warm

The more tender the plant, the more sensitive it is to cold weather. Therefore, it is important to keep your delicate plants warm in winter. Wrap potted plants that need protection in low temperatures in layers of horticultural fleece. This will do a good job to protect them from the harsh weather.

Wonderful Winter Plants

Some plants are more sensitive to cold weather than others. If you want your winter to be as fruitful as summer, then a good strategy is to plant those plants which are more resistant to cold weather. These are some wonderful winter plants which are most suitable to plant in winter.

Gardening Don'ts for Winter

  • Don't try to fertilize your plants. Its the time for them to rest. Forcing them to fertilize can make them even weaker and affect their overall ability to rejuvenate.
  • Don't forget to plant your plants. New plantings especially need watering so don't skip your schedule.

Gardening Do's for Winter

  • Don't stop planting. Plant as long as the ground is soft enough to dig a hole.
  • Mulch can help keep your soil at moderate temperatures.
  • Water your plants regularly. Be sure to hydrate above-ground shoots as well as the roots.
  • Add compost to the soil. It provides organic nutrients to the soil.
  • Pay extra attention to pot plants and protect them from the cold temperatures.

Hello anasshad, I found your Hub through your forum post. Good job overall on the hub. This is a very interesting topic. I like to garden as well and I live in California which is one of the warmer states in the U.S.A. I've always been intrigued about the prospect of gardening in the winter. I have left some specific answers to your question in the forum.
