How To Create Your Own Garden of Eden

Updated on June 6, 2015

Where is the Garden of Eden?

When you think about the Garden of Eden most likely you think about a beautiful ancient biblical place. The exact location is questionable because nobody really knows where it was. Also every belief and religion has their own perfect spot to place the Garden of Eden. Personally I believe the Garden of Eden can be situated anywhere as long as it fits certain conditions.

Just imagine a perfect and beautiful place somewhere here on earth. A place where you can truly relax. Where you feel totally at home and appreciated. In the garden of Eden you can enjoy Paradise on earth without any worries.

This lens about the Garden of Eden is an example on how you can create your own paradise on earth and be happy with the many things our planet has to offer. Therefore I believe that with a little creativity you can create just that place or paradise if you like as close to home as it gets.

In the Garden of Eden

Imagine yourself wandering around in the garden of Eden.

- What will you see?

- What noises or music do you (want to) hear?

- Will there be animals?

- Will there be the people you love?

- Will there be sunlight and rainbows?

- What do you need in your Garden to be happy?

You definitely don't need much money to make your own Garden of Eden. I do understand that in this crisis it can be really hard to have little or no money, but try to believe that it all will be better one day. And the best things in life are really free.

In the many pictures and paintings I have found on the internet you always see lots of trees green and flowers. Sometimes the picture is enriched by a happy couple and all kinds of animals, from birds till unicorns. In my Garden of Eden you will find it all, except for the unicorns of course.

Do you Believe?

Garden of Eden Found on my Roof

When you are longing for a place to be happy, why don't you create such a place of your own?

A couple of years ago I was really busy with my work, work and work. I didn't have the time to relax or to enjoy my life. When I got home I was tired and in my weekend I was recharging for the next week. I did have enough money, but I wasn't happy with my life. Not happy at all!

I bought lots of useless stuff online I didn't need and spend my money just to spend it. When I was on the edge of a breakdown I made an life changing decision. Was this the life I really wanted? Just to work all my life and don't have time for myself, my family and my friends? I wished I just could have a day or two that I could sit and do nothing if I pleased. Or to do lots of things if I choosed.

I then gave up on my full time job and started working part-time, I was lucky I could do that in my job (primary school). My worst fear was that I didn't have enough money to pay the bills and I admit it is hard to manage sometimes. But when I sit in my Garden of Eden just enjoying (thoughts off) my boyfriend, my animals sunbathing, the birds, the trees of green, my flowers, the rustling of the leaves, my really free time.....I could go on forever.... I'm happier with all those little things, than any present I could buy.

What did I need in my Roof Garden?

In my own Roof Garden of Eden I needed lots of sun, tropical colours, different places to relax, trees and flowers. That was really a hard task because everything we grow, must be in containers and pots. Also when we arrived here our garden was not much more than some broken tiles and some weeds.

Mother Nature helped out a little with some trees and plants that sprouted here and there. When they got to big, I relocated them in pots. That's the reason we have so many giant trees on our roof terrace.

I also wanted to grow my own vegetables and fruit. That was also really hard to do, because we can't make the roof terrace overloaded. We have two apple trees in big pots and they give us every year a small amount of tiny apples. Not enough to live from, but it's nice to grow your own apples.

We also grow tomatoes in the summer and that works really fine! In the picture below you can see them as little plants waiting to be relocated to a better spot.

Grow Your Own Vegetables

Ouw Own Swimming Pool

It was always my dream to have my own swimming pool. As said before we have a roof terrace and I don't think the downstairs neighbours would like us to come through the ceiling. We couldn't have a big pool either that would be too heavy.

So since a couple of years we have our own little inflatable swimming pool. It might look stupid and childish, but we enjoy it a lot. In the summer it's really hot out there and we can lay there with some tropical music, a homemade cocktail.....just relaxing and enjoying our own "Playa Hollandia"

Pets in Control

In my garden I also needed my cats and my dog to have their fun time outside. As I don't want my cats to leave the roof terrace (I'm too afraid they would get hurt or they annoy other people) we put chicken wire all around the fence. Now they can walk freely around and just enjoy being outside.

As you see in the picture on the right and below the only thing they need is a nice spot to relax. Sometimes we have to get some extra chairs so we could sit down as well.

My Home Office

When I started working part time I finally got the chance and time to focus on my many ideas and projects. I really would like to work from home, writing my books and doing various things online. In the summer I love to sit outside working on my computer in the burning sun. I quit when I want to and have everything I need within reach.

I can't wait to re-open my home office! Just a couple of weeks from now.

Great Views

At first I wasn't too happy with not having a regular garden, but this house was the only house we could afford a couple of years ago. With me working part-time now and my boyfriend not having a job at all we will stay here for a couple of years to come as well.

Since our garden is finished I'm really happy to have a roof paradise. We have the sun from very early in the morning till just after dinner time. Also we have a great view from side to side. It gives you a feeling of freedom and when the sun sets.... gives also big sightings. The picture below speaks for itself.

Enjoy the little things in Life

Even in your own garden you can see so many things, if you only try to see them. It can vary by seeing a butterfly landing on your table, little birds bathing in water, the flowers that bloom, the fragrance after a shower, the dark clouds before a thunderstorm. If you really can enjoy them, you get a feeling of true happiness no matter what.

Once in a while you will see something really special. Just like these two hot air balloons hovering over our house. You could hear the gas hissing, they were that close.

Sometimes I Even Can Enjoy the Rain

When we got a roof over a part of our terrace (made by old corrugated sheets) we could stay outside even more often. I really like the sound of the rain above my head. Makes me feel like I'm on a holiday. Because I painted the walls with yellow and also the pillows are in yellow.. I keep that tropical atmosphere no matter if it rains or when the sun shines.

What Do You Need To Create You Own Garden Of Eden?

The best part of this is that you don't even need a real garden. With a little imagination and creativity you can create you Garden of Eden everywhere, even inside.

Well what do you need?

Think of all the things that make you happy. Things that you need in your Garden of Eden. Do you want lots of green? Do you have animals that you want around? Do you have beloved ones that you need to be there? Do you like music? Is it raining a lot where you live? If so then make a roof over your terrace.

When you say you need a lot of money that is not true. Maybe just a little to buy flowers and furniture. But when you look around on the internet you find that people are giving away furniture, garden wood and all the things you need for free. You just have to go online to find it. It's all there!

The Garden of Eden Story

The story of the Garden of Eden tells us that there were two people, Adam and Eve. They were allowed by God to live in a beautiful place under certain conditions. The only thing they weren't allowed, was to eat the fruits of the tree. Of course they did..... when you tell a man not to do something, it becomes very tempting to do the opposite. They were then banned from paradise.

In my opinion the story tells us, to be happy with everything you have in your life. Not to be greedy and be happy with your life just the way it is. When you truly can enjoy all the (free) things life gives, you will feel deeply happy and satisfied. When I have a bad day and things are just not working for me, I always think that there are always people suffering worse on this planet. What I'm going through is nothing compared to them. Most of the time then.

Great lens. Very thoughtfully written. We have developed a garden ourselves in the tiny yard and also on our rooftop deck. I think it helps us with our creativity.

I have a lovely garden -- mostly because it manages to be somewhat private even though it is located in the suburbs and not because I am a great gardener.

Really nice idea. I love your roof garden. I think it's a very cool concept. No roof garden here but that's okay. I'm happy with what I have. Great ideas.
