Enjoy Fresh Cut Roses even Longer than a Gorgeous, and Expensive, Bouquet!

As my daughters both know, there is nothing that pleases this gardener more than a live plant for a gift giving occasion.

With a general idea hint to their father, my girl's picked me a live Rose bush for Mother's Day. I'm an obsessive gardener, but not much on Rose care and maintenance, but it's still alive and doing well regardless of my nearly criminal neglect. I'm still enjoying the yearly blooms 10 years later. But not to worry... I'll include a couple of essential tips below so even the least care can produce beautiful results.

Now I do realize that not everyone wishes to attempt even the minimal care mentioned above for rose shrubs so I have included one no-care to easy-care option to please any flower gardener!

You may wonder why...

I've only included a few links to Plants for purchase. I've chosen only plants that are not readily available since you can buy the other color roses like red, pink, white and yellow at your local home or garden center quite easily. To look for other colors not shown here, click one of the links to start your search.

The meaning of Purple Roses:

"Thought to be almost mystical in nature, with symbolism tied to enchantment, desire and even proceeding cautiously, it's not surprising that lilac and purple roses send a message of love at first sight, A great Valentine flower." 1

For the woman who loves the purity of a glorious white rose bloom.

The meaning of White Roses:

"Representing, humility, purity and innocence, the white rose - often referred to as the bridal rose - is associated with young love. In Scotland, when the white rose bloomed in autumn, it was seen as a token of early marriage. Also symbolizing truth and reverence, it sends a message of loyalty and says "I am worthy of you."" 1

The meaning of Red Roses:

"There's nothing secret about the red rose's symbolism of love. Valentine's Day would hardly exist without this bold and dramatic bloom. The ultimate symbol of romantic love and enduring passion, the red rose also conveys respect and the creative spirit of love. Representing true love stronger than thorns, the red rose is known universally as the lover's rose." 1

The meaning of Yellow Roses:

"While in Victorian times, the yellow rose symbolized jealousy, today it represents friendship, joy and caring. A bouquet of these sun-filled blossoms conveys warmth, gladness and affection." 1

Rose Cutting and Care

At the beginning of very early spring, before new growth - cut shrub down to the green main branches leaving at least 4-5 main stems (canes) measuring 5-12 inches long.

Feel free to clip Roses as they just begin to open. This will ensure a profusion of blooms... and they look great in a vase.

When clipping Rose stems, be sure to skip the first 5 leaf stem after them desired stem length. See illustration below.
