Using Solar Powered Garden Lights At Your Home

Updated on September 20, 2014

One of the best things that you can do to spruce up your garden is to add some solar powered garden lights. I'm not talking about lighting up your tomato plants although I don't guess there would be anything wrong with that. What I'm talking about is lighting that accentuates a sitting garden or flower garden.

You know the type. The kind with all kinds of flowers, shrubs, trees, grass, and maybe even a fountain for fish pond thrown in for good measure. The type with meandering pathways to stroll through and enjoy the beauty of the garden.

Using solar powered garden lights effectively in a garden can really transform it from a place that you can only enjoy during the day to a place that you can enjoy either day or night.

Garden lights can either gently illuminate a pathway or they can brighten up the entire garden. The choice is really up to you. Keep in mind that using lighting in your garden is really "decorating with light". If you use garden lighting effectively, you can have some dramatic effects on your garden.

You can illuminate pathways with low powered solar lights that are spaced evenly along the pathway boundaries. Nothing could be easier than installing these types of solar powered garden lights. All you have to do is take them out of the package and press them in the ground. Anyone can do it.

Another clever use of this type of solar garden lighting is with small solar spotlights. This type also simply presses into the soil. You can aim these lights in just the right spots to accentuate any of your favorite places in your garden

Installing Solar Powered Garden Lights

Few things could be more simple than installing solar powered garden lights.  In most cases these solar garden lights are built on a metal or plastic stake that is simply pressed in the ground.  If you can take them out of the package, pick out of spot in your garden where you would like to have some lighting, and press them into the ground, you can install solar garden lights.

The most difficult to install solar garden light fixture is still quite an easy task.  Some solar garden lighting is made to be attached to a solid fixture such as the building, a post, or a tree.  Installing these solar lighting fixtures is a very easy job.  All you need is a couple of simple hand tools and a few spare minutes.  It's easier if you have an electric drill with a screwdriver bit in it but you can still do it if all you have is a hand screwdriver.

To install this type of solar lighting, you just need to pick out the location where you want the light and decide where you're going to mount it.  Then, all you need to do is fasten the solar light fixture into something solid with the supplied mounting screws.

It's a good idea when installing solar powered lighting to place them in an area where they will get plenty of sun during the day.  They don't need to be in the sun all day but if they are exposed to the sunlight for a good amount of time, the small solar panel will be able to fully charg the rechargeable battery in the solar light fixture.

If you try to install a solar light fixture in an area where it will not get any sun, the battery will not get adequately charged and as a result you will not get much light from the fixture.  It's also likely that the battery will not last very long and need to be replaced quite often since it doesn't regularly get fully charged.

Keep in mind that in most locations the sun is brightest coming from the south.  If you orientate the solar panel on your solar lighting fixture in a southerly direction, it will get the most light and have the greatest chance of fully charging the battery.

Where To Buy Solar Powered Garden Lights

It's likely that your local home and garden shop will have a small selection of solar powered garden lights for you to choose from.  If you want to have the largest selection to choose from and who doesn't, you'll find your best shopping choices are in online stores like Amazon.Com.  There are a lot of online solar light retailers to choose from but Amazon is probably the largest and most reliable.

If you're going to buy your solar powered garden lights from an online retailer, it's a good idea to make sure that you do so from a well known company.  Since anyone with a computer can throw up an online store on the Internet quite easily it can be tough to know if you're dealing with reputable people.

By doing business with well known, established online retailers, you can do your online shopping and know that you are likely to be very happy with your purchases.  If for some reason you are unhappy with the product that you purchased, dealing with a reputable online retailer ensures that you will be able to return the product without any problems.

Most reputable online retailers have very good return policies.  You will need to pay return shipping and it's not likely that they will refund your origianal shipping charges but most of them will either refund your purchase price or send you a replacement product.

Another advantage of purchasing online is that if you live in a state that has sales tax, you can buy online and not have to pay the tax.  That's the way online retailers work today anyway.  I noticed in the news this morning that there are some legislators that are trying to tax online sales but for the time being most online sales are not taxed.
