Nothing says Spring Like Tulips

Updated on September 14, 2014

Yellow Tulips Spell Spring

There is nothing quite as lovely as a yellow tulip. It is still winter and snow is on the ground, but my heart is longing for the warm days of spring. As I was doing my weekly shopping, I spotted a bin full of tulips. Now to me, nothing says spring like a yellow tulip, so I bought myself a bunch of tulips and put them in a vase in my kitchen.

Now for a few days I would have a little spring right in my kitchen. I photographed the tulips during the five days they survived in the vase and this lens will show you the tulips from Day 1 through Day 5. When the Senior Squid challenge for the last week in February was Spring, I decided to share these photos in a lens.

This lens was written in early 2010 and here it is a snowy January in 2011 and my thoughts again have turned to tulips. This year I bought a bunch of purple tulips. I will add their images along with the yellow tulips for each day. Enjoy!

I hope you enjoy my touch of spring.

Day One - spring time color

Here is what the tulips looked like when I first brought them home and put them in a vase. You can see just a touch of yellow on the green stems and a hint of the beauty that awaits. I think these tulips are beautiful even on day one...but I do say that part of the beauty of an unopened tulip is in the anticipation of the beauty that will be coming.

Tulip Gifts - perfect for giving

Do you know someone who loves tulips? Here are some great gift ideas. I love the way these delicate flowers are made into jewelry designs.

Day Two

By the second day the tulips were already opened. What a beautiful sight! I think this is the prettiest time for a tulip when they are all fresh and just starting to open.

Day Four

By the fourth day the tulips were fully opened. You notice the stems started to lean sideways. I thought they still made a pretty arrangement, different then the day before. It was fun to photograph them as they changed each day.

Day Five

By the fifth day some of the petals were starting to fall of the flowers. In this photo I looked down into the center of the tulip to take the photo. You will notice the slight red markings on the inside. I think this is an interesting view.

Beautiful till the very end!

Growing your Own Tulips

I love spring flowers and tulips area very beautiful classic spring flower that comes in a variety of colors. I have planted bulbs before but I am never sure if I am doing the correctly.

This great video from eHow at Home gives some great tips on growing your own tulips. I think the biggest tip that I learned from it is to pack lots of bulbs in a container. I think I've always been to sparse with my bulbs in the past. Take a look at this video and perhaps you will pick up a tip for yourself.

Happy Planting

Have a garden full of beautiful tulips with these tips.

Learn how to Paint your own Watercolor

Do you have a favorite flower?

Daisies
Daisies

I love all types of flowers. Some of my favorites include tulips, daisies, mums, cone flowers, daffodils and hydrangea. If I had to pick just one variety I would pick the common white daisy with a yellow center. It is simple but beautiful.

If you had to pick just one, which of these would be your favorite

Beautiful photos. I love tulips of all colors and plan to plant many of them when we move into our new home next year. We're selling a home right now, but we'll be taking most of the tulips with us.

Thanks so much for sharing these lovely yellow blooms. Tulips are my favorite, and this bright page brought some warmth into a chilly not-spring-yet day. (I know, I know, I live in CA, it's ridiculous to complain about chilly winter weather!)

Though the yellow tulips on this page are beautiful, my favorite spring flowers are Lilies of the Valley. Thank you so much for sharing your tulips with us. :)

I love tulips almost beyond reason.

Gregory Maguire, the guy who wroteWicked The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West also did a rewrite of Cinderella, where we learn some history of the tulip. During that time they were so revered that there was actually a black market in tulip bulbs!

I could go for a big 'ole bouquet of tulips right now .... guess I'm going to have to settle for a pile of leaves since they are already on the ground around here. My how time flies. What a lovely lens!

A very nice lens about the tulip. We had a lot of them in Germany, but unfortunately they are not growing here.

But my favorite spring flower always was the crocus. Whenever you saw them coming out, you knew winter was gone.

Very pretty yellow tulips. I think Tulips are the most elegant spring flower. It's hard to pick a favorite as their color is so shiny and bright. Happy Spring!

Yellow is my favorite color for flowers ~ so sunshiny and bright! My tulips are usually up this time of year, but the extra snowy winter has slowed them a wee bit. The stems are just starting to pop up. I'll get to see them soon! :D

I absolutely love this lens! I know just how you felt when you got your tulips! My hubby got me some last winter, not yellow but pink and red. I didn't know whether to cry, laugh, both or what to do with myself. I was so miserable and its just like hubby brought spring to me in a bouquet of tulips! I think I may just do me up a lens on the expericne! Thanks for the inspiration!

This is a beautiful, beautiful, lens. I love tulips and these yellow ones are stunning. If you are ever on the Pacific NorthWest Coast in the spring, you might visit the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. Picture miles and miles of nothing but tulips and and daffodils in bloom. I live in Vancouver Canada and often cross the border to visit the tulip fields in the spring.

I love the tulips. I really wish I could put some in my garden, but tulips don't do well here in SC.

Oh these yellow tulips are gorgeous! We're still on snowdrops outside, and they're barely making it above the snow! I love all the spring bulbs - yellow daffodils, orange and white and purple crocuses, blue fragrant hyacinths, and lots of colors of tulips of course!
