Backyard wood bird houses and bird house designs

Updated on April 13, 2014

Unique wood birdhouses decorate the garden and provide outdoor fun

Succumb to Bird House Spring Fever Now and for Father's Day

Spring and summer bring birdhouses and bird house plans of all shapes and sizes. You'll find decorative bird houses and crazy designs, Bird homes for sale include those tall, complex Martin bird houses, Garden magazines are full of fun ideas for building homes for birds with wooden bird houses and plenty of easy birdhouse plans.

Where to buy wooden bird houses

I don't know about you but every year I see cars, trucks and vans parked on the side of roads loaded with unique, cool, fun, and odd birdhouses for sale. Usually they've been made by the seller so you can gather up stories about these well-crafted bird homes while you examine all the varied styles. The birdhouse is such a popular decorative garden item that you can find them anywhere. Home Depot and Lowe's have them. Local hardware stores stock them. Even online stores like Amazon have a great variety for sale.

Love those Martin bird houses

For me the granddaddy of all bird houses are those made for the Martins. No one-story simple house for these birds. Many Martin bird houses are found for sale on the side of the road. They're the ones that sit high on a pole. Often they have intricate plans and are even two and three stories. I'm always amazed at them, too. Check out the stylish 5-starred houses below. I've never owned a Martin birdhouse but this may be the year. What about you?

Wood bird houses are fun gifts and great for Father's Day

Bird houses like this Noah's ark wood bird house pictured here make fun gifts for Father's Day, Mother's Day, or any holiday that falls from Spring to early Fall. I used to give my dad birdhouses and he'd hang them on the big tree outside the screened patio where he could easily see them.

This 5-starred Martin bird house would thrill any Purple Martin family in your neighborhood. It's a large 12-room house made of redwood and solidly constructed. Even has Masonite room dividers and floors. The best part is that the roof lifts off easily so it's a cinch to clean. What i like are the small protective rails that will discourage those irritating house squatters otherwise known as starlings.

If a nice 12-room house isn't for you, your favorite birds, or your potential Martin family, how about this fancy clubhouse styled bird house? Two styles are offered: one for Purple Martins and one for other types of birds. The best part, for me at least, is that this comes fully assembled. The birds might find the separate nesting boxes more important. The bird house comes unpainted wooden bird house so you can let your artistic muse loose.

We only have one little bird house set up in a nook of our roof but we also have a dead birch tree in our year which a small bird has pecked out a nest in. This year I was thrilled to help play mom to a nest of baby birds. The birch is near our apple tree and mom and dad hopped from the apple tree to the nest with food. It was a pleasure to watch this little family.
