Film School

Updated on March 5, 2008

If you've always wanted to go to film school, here are some American film school recommendations. I chose one on each coast of the United States.

The Los Angeles Film School

The Los Angeles Film School is located in the heart of Hollywood and opened its doors in 1999. The school is located at the famous RCA building on Sunset Boulevard. The Los Angeles Film School is a private institution. Financial aid is available.

Some of the teaching staff members at The Los Angeles Film School have worked on films such as Jerry Maguire, The Matrix, Back to the Future, Gremlins, and other great movies. There are four new soundstages on the campus.

The Los Angeles has an intensive one year filmmaking program. The filmmaking program lasts for 48 weeks. When finished with the film training, students will have completed over 1000 hours of training and on-the-job experience in the film industry. Classes take about 30 hours per week, not counting outside assignments and classes in electives. The emphasis is on producing, directing, editing, sound design, screenwriting, cinematography, and production design for film school students.

On the east coast, there is the New York Film Academy. The New York Film Academy, or NYFA, has an intense one year film school program, a two year conservatory film school, as well as film workshops. Alumni of NYFA include the children of famous director Steven Spielberg, as well as Susan Sarandon and Kevin Kline's kids.

NYFA has campuses around the world, including Rome, Paris, London, Florence, and Hollywood. NYFA offers a Master of Fine Arts in filmmaking, screenwriting, acting, and producing. The one year intensive hands-on filmmaking program involves students learning to direct, work the camera, write, and edit projects. Students will finish 8 projects by the end of the filmmaking program. Students will work on the crew of 29 other film projects.

Go to Film School No Matter Where You Live

There are several other film schools or film school programs across the United States. Geography is really no reason to cross off film school. There are both private and public film schools all over the United States.

A few examples are Arizona State University School of Theatre and Film, Ball State University in Indiana, Florida State University Film School in Tallahassee, Ohio University School of Film, University of Oklahoma Film and Video Studies, and many, many more. If you want to attend film school, it is well within your reach. Just do it.

That's really useful content and good writing too.

I Just dropped up. The place is falling apart and I don't want to pay back a grip of loans for something I won't benefit from. It's the blind leading the blind. The whole staff is upset on how management is treating them so it makes me question if they can't take care of their staff how can they take care of their students. The place looks great but it's like a hot blond woman who can't offer a man anything. The L.A. Film School has nothing to offer.
