Should Valentines day be a Holiday?

Updated on February 4, 2010

Holiday or not?

With the new holiday in north america coming February 18th, Family day I began to wonder if the day of love and romance should be a holiday too. We celebrate our families, mothers, fathers and even grandparents so why not love too.

Well in my opinion no it shouldn't be a holiday, unfortunately a lot of people are depressed on Valentines day because they are alone. That doesn't mean of course those who do have others to share this day shouldn't make it special day but not a holiday. I think we have to many holidays, yes it's nice to get paid to stay home but still I think Valentines Day should stay as it i just another day. What do you think?

I tend to think that we should try to make every day "Valentines Day". I am somewhat of a traditionalist but I happen to think that the commercial interest in Valentines Day is out of control. One time we waited over 3 hours at a restaurant because it was "Valentines Day", similarly the cost of roses skyrocket! I am much more impressed when my husband brings me flowers from the man selling them on the corner as he comes home from work, then with the overpriced roses he "has to get" because it is Valentines Day. Again, I say everyday we should take time to show appreciation to the ones we love, do we really need a holiday?
