Taking Care of a Cockatiel

Updated on November 29, 2007

Taking care of a cockatiel can be lots of fun! The only thing you need is patience. Always make sure you will have time to play with your cockatiel before you get one. Cockatiels can get very lonesome. Usually it's best to get 2 if your're gonna be gone most of the time. That way they can interact with each other.

Every day you must clean the bottom of the cage. You should use paper towels to spoil them or you can just use a newspaper. Cockatiels tend to stay on their perches more than they stay on the ground. You can also tear up some paper and put it in there. They love it. You must also clean their water once a day .You can get bird vitamins and just put a few drops in there. Then you will need to give them some grid and some bird food.YOU MUST PUT A STONE GRID IN THERE! Or else there beaks will be to sharp . Cockatiels are very curious. You should always put toys in there. For instance a :

  • bells

  • ladders

  • rope rings

All that stuff. There are many other toys out there for your bird. So just keep looking.

Cockatiels love to sun bathe. You should always put the cage near a window or put the cage outside for about twenty minutes. After that , cool them down. Get a spray bottle and stand back about 10 inches. Don't spray them to harsh. They won't enjoy it, just nice and slow. The water should be warm, not cold, not hot. Or you can always just get a bowl and fill it up with warm water. That way they don't get a chill. After that let them sit out there for another 5 minutes. But ,please remember , don't soak your bird. It will be hard for them to dry. Then there is a chance that they will get sick. : (

You should always let them fly everyday for at least a 30 minutes. Becareful of your wallpaper my cockatiels use to chew it, until I repainted it.

ALWAYS talk to them soothingly .They love it! It's best to get them when they are real young. They will just hang around you most of the time. Watch out though those sweet inocent looking birds will get a nasty temper out of no where. Just sit it out and leave them alone! If you don't they will bite! But at the end, they will be the happiest living thing on the block. Just let them chill.

So there you have it . I hope you learned something. Please tell me if I have forgotten anything. : )
