General Assistance & General Relief Program Info (Single Adult Low Income Cash Assistance)
General Assistance (GA) is like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
However, unlike TANF, you do not have to be the parent or guardian of a minor child.
GA it is short-term cash assistance for low income adults who do not have minor children (Single Adults).
In the relatively few states where General Assistance programs exist, it is referred to alternately as General Relief (GR) or General Relief Assistance (GRA).
Regardless of the name of the program, it still has a basic premise - to provide cash assistance, and sometimes other benefits, to adults who do not have children.
Limited Availability
As I alluded to above, the program is very limited and only available in certain states.
Even in states where the single adult cash assistance program is available, it still may not be available in all counties.
In most states where General Assistance is available, it is further limited by the availability of funds - In some instances, when the money runs out, applications are no longer accepted.
In some places, General Relief benefits cover medical and dental expenses (like Medicaid), and it may also be combined with the Food Stamp Program, or SNAP program (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance).
The following links will take you to General assistance applications, and eligibility information for the states and counties that participate in the program.
Other states, and/or counties may operate GA/GR programs, but these are the ones in which I am aware.
As this page is designed to be a living document, I will update the page with new information as it becomes available.
