Updated on March 13, 2013

Real Estate Scam - The Opening Move

Here is the latest in Nigerian scam techniques. Now they have gone the hotels and real estate way. This morning I received what I think is the latest technique being used by the 419 scammers. The following is the initial mail I received from someone named Kevin Brantford.

From: kevin_bre17@hotmail.com

Subject: Enquiry / Hotel or Real Estate?

Date: Mon, 11 Oct 2007 14:44:21 -0400

Goodday ,

I am looking for your cooperation in building a Tourist Hotel or Real Estate in your country. I am sorry if this is not in line with your business.I need an experienced person like you to assist me to set up, develop the project and assume responsibility of ownership as chairman but will be bringing in profit /distribute profit monthly or annually.

However ,I got your email information on your Hotel contact list. your immediate reply will be highly appreciated and I shall give you more information on this project,

Mr Kevin Brentford

My Reply

Although I was sure it is some sort of 419 scam, I just want to check what this guy's next step before reporting it to the authorities.

So I sent a reply with just one line, "Sure. I am interested. Send me details"

Scammer's follow up

This time the reply came from another mail id and it came quite fast too.

Confirm this Mail.(Enquiry / Hotel or Real Estate)‏ From: kevin Brentford (kevin_brentford4@yahoo.co.uk) Sent: Thursday, October 11, 2007 6:50:05 PM Reply-to: kevin_brentford3@yahoo.co.uk

Dear SunSeven Good Day to you, I saw your mail and the content was clearly noted, I want you to know that I appreciate your response to my mail, anyway I am willing to deal with you, I am an Honest Person and my Joy is to Invest in such venture that is with your assistance as a citizen of your country.

I am interested in the Five Star Hotel in Country can you tell me more about the Hotel and for how much, Because I owned a Real Estate Investment here in England but sold it as at last Year due to the High Rate of Taxes here, I was not making much benefit, this is the very reason why I want to Invest there in your country.

I would appreciate if I gain your Trust and honestly towards our partnership.

Lastly I must Let you know that I am sick of Cancer and making arrangement to go for a Cancer Operation but before then I want to see the success in this Project, If you must know I deposited all I sold of my Real Estate Investment with a Financial Company here in England for safe keeping.

You can reach me on +44 70318 70 051 kindly forward me your contact details.

As soon as I gain your response to this mail we will discuss further.

My Best Regards

Mr. Kevin Brantford

This was more than enough to convince me to take the steps I needed to take in the first instance. You can see that he could not even spell his name right. So if ever you receive mails like this please do not hesitate to report them. No doubt other names will be used in the mail using this theme and other mail ids will be used to send them to you. I decided to publish this hub just to let you know if you are not aware of this already.

Best Regards

SunSeven

I worked for a global shipping company in North America. We had customers (lol) from Nigeria and India who shipped broken watches, to try to claim on insurance, used other peoples credit cards to purchase goods for forwarding on to Nigeria and India. In the end, we just stopped doing business unless it was cash up front and there was absolutely no chance of us getting scammed. These people are dishonest by nature, I suggest it is in their DNA.

The bigger scam is finding legitimate housing listings then posing as the owner and asking for fees to be wired as a deposit.

Yes, some of them are truly stupid! Unfortunately they are giving their countries a bad name. Pls note that not all these scam mails emanate from Nigerians alone. Some are of other African nations but everyone believes they are Nigerians because they are well known for it. Secondly, while not holding brief for anyone, a great majority of Nigerians are hard working and honest people who work hard for their income. One bad apple spoils a whole bunch...remember? Unfortunately there are quite a number of bad apples involved in 419 scams...pity.

I received it too, I decided to follow this guy game. Now he is telling me that some one, a diplomat, will come to my country with 2 trunks full of money us$175 M. He send me a passport image and called me.

In this kind of transactions they look for money like feees for transfering the money, to pay for embarks, things like that.

I stood hard in the point that I was willing to participate under the condition that I was able to use my time but in no case to put money, not a penny, I said. This did not disuade him, on the contrary he proceeded with emails to tell me he would pay everything.

My conclusion is simple: Their English is defective, when they dear to call you, an african accent and their natural tendency to impatience denounces them.

I am not a man who segregates others by race, religion or national origin, se orientation but are those guys stupid?.
