Updated on June 27, 2011

Inquiring Minds Want To Know: How Can I Get Out Of Debt?

The question on everyones mind these days is how can I get out of debt? Are you paying too many bills and looking for a solution? Do you have money problems that revolve around debt? Millions of people live with debt that they cannot afford and it is not a fun situation to be in.

Debt is owing money for things you already own and you pay interest on that money. You may have acquired debt from buying a house, a car or furniture. You also acquire debt by using credit cards to buy everyday things such as food, clothes and gasoline. The truth is that being in debt sucks whether you are hundreds of dollars in debt or hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. Wanting to know "How Can I Get Out of Debt" is the first step in the right direction of being debt-free.

Being in debt is overwhelming and getting out of debt is invigorating. Many people undergo a lot of stress from owing money. You work every day and most of your paycheck goes toward paying off debt. It becomes harder and harder to keep your head above water. You can't imagine the relief you will feel when your debt is gone and it can be if you make a financial plan and STICK WITH IT!

Ten Tips On How You Can Get Out of Debt

1. Spend less then you bring in. Spending more than you make is the biggest thing that causes problems in personal finances.

2. Focus on paying off one debt at time and pay off the debt with the smallest balance first. You will soon see your balances reducing and you will feel less overwhelmed.

3. Create a budget that includes every single thing you buy. Be sure to figure in emergency spending such as car repair or prescriptions. Make sure the budget is livable and make it work.

4. Stop any charges you make with recurring payments such as monthly subscription fees.

5. Pay cash for everything you purchase. Interest on credit gets overwhelming. If you don't have the money then do not buy it.

6. Don't rely on credit cards for emergencies. In fact don't use your credit cards at all.

7. Communication works wonders for getting out of debt. Call the credit cards or loan companies and tell them the situation you are in. Let them know you are trying to pay off your debt. They may work with you and give you a lower interest rate so you can continue to pay. It is much better for them then to receive lower amounts rather than nothing if you file bankruptcy.

8. Cash out your savings to pay off debt. You are financially better off being charged less interest on loans than on receiving a low interest on a savings account. The money is put to better use by paying off debt.

9. Always pay more than the minimum amount due. Your debt will decrease much faster.

10. Know your situation and pay close attention to how you spend money. Be frugal so you have more leftover cash for more important things like paying off debt.

How Can I Get Out of Debt and Stay Out of Debt?

Once you get out of the depths of debt, you want to make sure you stay debt free. There are some tips you can follow that will help you stay out of debt.

  • The number one way of staying out of debt is to not undertake any new debt. If you don't have the cash to buy something don't buy it. This is essential for staying out of debt.

Great share! I think if necessary, the best way to get out of debt is to prevent ourselves from getting into it in the first place. Cheers! :-)
