Money Machine: Finding Hot Products to Sell on Ebay

Updated on August 18, 2012

© 2012 by Aurelio Locsin.

You can sell almost anything on eBay such as earrings, books, clothing, toys, cars and real estate. You want to choose products that not only have a good profit margin but also have high appeal, so your listings don’t expire without a bid. Fortunately, the site offers two free ways to find the most popular products: Pulse and Popular Items.

  1. Browse the eBay Pulse page, if you want to see the most popular items that are being searched or watched, or the largest stores.
  2. View the top ten most popular searches in the upper left. This listed is sorted from the greatest number of searches to the least. Click an item name to view the listings of products being sold under that item. Click your browser’s “Back” button to return to the Pulse page.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the Pulse page to view the items that are most watched. These are products that individuals are putting into their watch list because they want to know the outcome of an auction. Individuals may eventually bid on an item when the auction almost ends. Click the item link to view its auction details. Click your browser’s “Back” button to return to the Pulse page.
  4. View the top five largest stores list on the upper right, which are sorted according to the number of active listings. This shows you the general types of goods that are being sold in large quantities. Click the store name to visit its page and browse the item listings.

  1. Browse the eBay Popular Items page if you want to want to specify the category in which to find the hottest products.
  2. View the top ten popular products in the upper left. Click a product name to list the items being sold under that product. Click your browser’s “Back” button to return to the Popular Items page.
  3. Click a category to display its list of subcategories, which is arranged alphabetically.
  4. Click a subcategory to display its page. The page first briefly describes the subcategory and shows an example of an item and price. It then lists the auctions under that subcategory. Click an auction name to view its listing.

If you want more detailed information on hot products and don’t mind paying a monthly fee, visit eBay Marketplace Research. It tracks historical prices of a product, monitors your competition, and helps you find the most effective keywords and categories for your listing.

      I've been fairly lucky, Linda, in not having experienced any duds on Ebay yet.

      I like Ebay to buy and sell. In 13 years of doing business on Ebay I've had one bad purchase for $5. For that I am thankful! Thanks for the tips about where to fine goodies :)

      ~~~Happy Birthday~~~
      Wow -- didn't know about how to research on eBay -- so thanks. I do a bit on eBay (mostly to get rid of stuff too good to garage sale but that I don't want anymore -- inherited a bunch of good stuff). Your information should help immensely -- thanks again! Best/Sis
      Thank you for this very interesting and needful Hub. I have not been involved at all with ebay but the idea is growing on me. My mother ought to be on "Hoarders" and maybe I could move some of her things on ebay. (She hoards good things, not trash.)
      Great advice! I think this is how so many people get wealthy selling cell phone covers. Jewelry is a great way to make money on Ebay. Many auctions go for a penny on really nice jewelry. (You would be surprised how nice!). I search these deals and select the ones with free shipping. I will get a ring for 50 cents and sell it online for $7- which is still an attractive price for buyers. I don't know why they sell these items so cheap but it has been a great way to make money as a reseller on Ebay. I will check out Ebay Pulse too. Very helpful hub!
      Didn't have a clue about this feature on eBay. I've kind of deserted them as their fees have become exorbitant in my mind -- there was a time I made a pretty good "moonlighting" living on eBay but things have definitely changed and for my purposes -- not for the better. Thanks for a very informative Hub. Best/Sis
      I didn't know there was a difference between "pulse" and "popular". Very interesting. I once sold a Peruvian chess set (Incas vs. Spaniards) on Ebay. It was damaged in the mail between Peru and the U.S. and by the time I provided the replacement pieces, I'd lost money on the deal. But you never know, maybe I'll try it again someday. Thanks for the useful information, alocsin.
      I find this very helpful. I have stopped selling things on ebay in the last couple of years. The postage costs have gone up and people aren't willing to pay so much more for certain items.
      Hi alocsin,
      I am not sure what has kept me away from ebay for so long though I have been using Amazon for about five years now. Maybe it was because I have not understood the techniques for using this site. Now I know who I can turn to for help- your awesome hubs. Thanks for the tips. sharing it as always. Cheers, Rema.
      Up, useful, and awesome Alocsin. I am a big fan on these types of articles Alocsin. You are very wise when it comes to working on the internet. Appreciate the tips to increase my profits. I saw where you were voted "most likely to be a millionaire." Thought that was cool, so congrats! I never look at the news letters. With ideas and knowledge that you have Alocsin, I have to agree. Another AWESOME hub pal!
