Shop Your Way Rewards at K-Mart and Sears Stores

Updated on February 5, 2017

What Is It?

The Shop Your Way Rewards program is a completely free rewards program that K-Mart and Sears offer to their customers. To put it in a nutshell, you get free money for shopping with K-Mart and Sears. Here I will explain more about what it is and how to use it to its fullest.

If you were not aware about this program you have been missing out on a lot. Every time you shop at either K-Mart or Sears (K-Mart bought out Sears so they are one in the same now) you earn points on every dollar spent. These points then turn into virtual money (I like to call it K-Cash) that can be spent on anything in the store.

Shop and Earn

The Break Down

Okay so lets say you go shopping a K-Mart and buy some new clothes. When you go to check out your total comes to $32.87. If you are just a base member you would earn 329 points. For every dollar you spend you get ten points. For every thousand points you earn you have a dollar in "K-Cash". So you would have just earned .32 good towards anything in the store. Now I know what you are thinking, that doesn't sound very rewarding at all. Well no not if you think about it that way, for every $100 you spend you only get $1 back.

If you are just a casual shopper and don't utilize in-store promotions or coupons, then yes it will take awhile to earn a lot of extra spending money. This doesn't mean you wont still earn though, all points are good for a year so you have all year to earn and save up those points.

Sears Credit Card

Want to earn 5x the points on each purchase, just apply for a Sears credit card. Every cashier has the ability to process an application at the register. It takes a couple of extra minutes, but is well worth it in the end. If you are approved you will start earning 50 points for every dollar spent instead of just 10 and you save $10 on your first statement. You must use the credit card on your purchases to get the 5x points, just applying and getting approved isn't enough.

So lets say you went in and bought those same clothes. Your total comes to $32.87 except this time when the cashier asks if you would like to apply for the Sears credit card you say yes. They run your application through and you are approved. Great, now instead of just earning 329 points you have earned 1645 points. This equals out to $1.64, since 1000 points equals $1. On top of that you will really only pay $22.87 because $10 will be taken off your first card statement since you were approved.

Now it is getting a little easier to earn those points. If you use your Sears card every time you will only have to spend $20 to make $1.

Friends and Family

There is always going to be that person who doesn't want to sign up. I've heard just about every excuse in the book. This doesn't mean they don't have a friend or family member with an account. Let your friends and family know that you are a member. Ask them if they are a member. They aren't, well let them know they can use your account (If they don't plan on making their own). Tell them they will be able to get special members only pricing on select items and it will help you build up points. Trust me it works, if a customer comes through my line and they don't have an account and don't want to sign up I ask who ever is with them if they have an account, if they do they quickly offer to put the purchase under their membership. It can be a win win for both of you. Just give them your phone number and tell them to use it when they check out. Now you're not only earning points for your purchases, but the purchases of one, two, maybe even ten different people. This could make your points skyrocket and earn you tons of "K-Cash"!

Bonus Points

What are bonus points? They are points rewarded for buying certain products. If you look in the monthly and weekly circular it will let you know if any products reward bonus points when purchased. It wont list all of them though so keep an eye out while shopping to find the ones they left out. They can be rewarded for an exact item or for buying a certain amount of products in a category.

Here are some examples for you. You look in this weeks circular and see that air mattresses are on sale for 59.99, on top of that they are offering $5 in rewards points for purchasing the mattress. When you go to checkout you will receive 600 base points plus 5,000 bonus points for a total of 5,600 points, or $5.60 in "K-Cash". Remember if you use your Sears credit card you will get 5% more in points (base points only, not bonus points).

While you are shopping around you see a sign that says you can earn 20,000 bonus points for purchasing $200 dollars or more in electronics. It just so happens you need a new television and purchase one for $299.99. So when you checkout you will receive 3,000 base points and 20,000 bonus points for a total of 23,000 points or $23 in "K-Cash". Again if you use your Sears credit card, you will receive 5% more in base points. In this example I used a single item, but it works if you buy more than one item to equal $200, like say a stereo for $89.99 and a new surround sound system for $99.99 and some cables for $29.99.

One thing to keep in mind is that when you have to purchase a certain amount in one category, it is before taxes. So if you need to buy $200 in order to get 20,000 bonus points your total before taxes has to be $200 or greater. If your total is $199.99 before taxes and over $200 after taxes you will not receive the bonus points.

Sweepstakes

You've learned how to earn points, now learn how to win points. After you have made your account on shopyourway.com look for the sweeps button. Here you will find dozens of different sweeps whose prize can be anywhere from 10,000 points ($10) to 250,000 points ($250). Some are as easy to sign up as following a page. Others require a little bit of work, these are the high point payers. There are also sweeps for other things like vacations and merchandise. The sweeps keep on coming, new ones get put on all the time. Why not try your luck? It's free and anyone can win.

Coupons

The easiest and fastest way to earn points is to use coupons. When you checkout you will more than likely receive some coupons along with your receipt. I always think it's funny when customers tell me we are killing a forest when I hand them their receipt and coupons. First of all it's really not that much paper, and second it can save them money or earn them money (depending on which coupons they receive). ALWAYS LOOK AT YOUR COUPONS! I can't stress this enough. You will receive coupons that give you money off if you buy a certain amount in a category. This can be $5 off a $25 purchase or $10 off a $40 purchase. You never know what you will get and they differ widely. Most are for a specific category like apparel or electronics, but sometimes you luck out and it's for all merchandise. Then there are the point offers. These put more points into your account and can actually be a better value than getting money off. You can get ones that give you a percentage of points like 20% back in points on your next purchase of $25 or more. Or you can get specific ones like $10 in points on your next purchase of $35 or more (this one is my favorite, I use it every time I get it). When you check out always opt for the printed receipt, just incase you get a good coupon.

You can get more than just the coupons in store. After you have joined go to shopyourway.com and create your own personal account. This is very easy and can be very beneficial. Once your account is up simply click the coupons button on your home page and start adding. You will get coupons for earning points and for saving money. They differ from the ones in store, but are still worth checking out. If you see one you like just click to add it to your account. Next time you go in it will automatically be used if you have met the requirements. These coupons change, get added to, and get taken away, so I suggest checking it out once a week or so to keep up with them.

Shop. Earn. Redeem!

FREE Points

Every now and then K-Mart will reward you with free points. Yes these are completely free and given completely at random. I get them every two to three weeks and they range from 2,000 points ($2) to 5,000 points ($5). Sometimes they will send you an email saying you have received these points, but usually you have to keep up with it on shopyourway.com. These points don't last long, you have one to two weeks to use them before they go away. I like to keep up with these because come on who doesn't love free money?

How To Join

So I hope that after reading all of this you realize that you want to join (if you aren't a member already). It's the easiest part of the whole program. When you go to checkout the cashier will ask if you are a member, you say no but would like to join. The cashier will then ask for your e-mail, phone number, and name. You will be asked to agree to the terms and conditions of the program, you have to agree to join, if you hit no you wont be able to take advantage of this program. Don't worry you aren't agreeing to sell your soul, the paper you receive tells you the dos and don'ts of the program. You're all set, now you're earning free "K-Cash"!

How To Redeem

Redeeming is even easier than joining. After the cashier is done ringing up your items simply let them know you would like use your points. You will have to enter a pin to redeem them. If you have recently joined or are going to join you should already have one (it is now required when you join to set up a pin) If it has been a while since you joined you may have to call the SYWR hotline and set up a pin, or go to shopyourway.com, create an account (if you don't already have one) and set up a pin there. You can use all of your points at once or just some of them. It's all up to you!
