Thanedar - A Perfect Budget Friendly Vacation Near Delhi
Friends, first of all sorry as I was not able to post anything in my series of budget travel destinations and frugal travel hotels for the past few months, as I was concentrating on writing for other topics at hubpages. Anyways, this week, I am back with a very small and relatively unknown beautiful destination in Himachal Pradesh which is called Thanedar. No, no its name is not inspired from a “police inspector” as we say in Hindi but it is a place where you will find undiscovered and unspoiled natural beauty.
Above all, the most important thing is that just like my previously discussed travel destinations near Delhi, Thanedar is also a budget friendly vacation destination and traveling to this place including food, boarding, lodging, and enjoying nature will not hurt your finances, so let’s start this beautiful journey and unravel the awesome beauty of Thanedar at a relatively low budget.
Thanedar is not in maps
Another important thing about this beautiful place is that you will not find Thanedar on any of the maps available online. As you can see via the map below that the nearest place on the map near Thanedar is Theog after Fagu, so what are you thinking now, will you find any other perfect budget travel deal like Thanedar which is still undiscovered and unexplored by many.
I told you Thanedar is unexplored as it is not on the map till now.
History of Thanedar
Thanedar is known for its variety and quality of Apples. In fact, Thanedar has been the birth place of Indian apples.
Location of Thanedar
A little hamlet in Shimla District of Himachal Pradesh, Thanedar means “Thandi Dhar” (cool mountain). Thanedar is surrounded by apple orchards at 7,250 feet above sea level.
At a height 7250 feet above mean sea level, Thanedar is still a small undiscovered one long mall road destination with some government buildings and a very few shops surrounded by apple orchards a perfect place for frugal living. Also in any season, a weekend sojourn to Thanedar would satisfy the traveler in you, enjoying the aroma of apple trees and the lush greenery this place offers.
Places of Interest in Thanedar

- Apple Orchards.
- Shrine of Snake Priest (Naag Devta).
Budget for Visiting Thanedar - Cost of Fuel, Stay, and Food
As has been the norm in my previous hubs, we will take four people and a self driven petrol car with 15 kilometers per liter overall efficiency and a self driven diesel car with 18 kilometers per liter efficiency. I always recommend self driven if you want to save money on travel. The fuel price will be taken standard as Rs. 52 per liter and diesel at Rs. 40 per liter for the calculation. The original route for visiting Thanedar will be from Delhi to Thanedar via Shimla and then back.
Cost of Travel - Both Sides
Fuel: As the distance from Delhi is around 450 km one side, we will add another 50 km only for local travel, as there is not much around this place to see, so the total distance comes to 950 km.
Now Compare Budget Petrol with Diesel Car
Petrol Car
| 950/15 = 64 liters x 52
| = 3328
|
---|---|---|
Diesel Car
| 950/18 = 53 liters x 40
| = 2120
|
From the above table, you can compare that a self driven diesel car from Delhi is more cost efficient than a car on petrol.
Stay: As Thanedar has only 2 to 3 options out of which Banjara Retreat is the most budget friendly, so we will take its price into consideration. The price of per night on twin sharing basis in Banjara Retreat is minimum 4400 per night to 7000 per night, but we will take the cheapest budget room, so for two night stay, it would be 8800*2 = 17600. It includes all meals.
Food: Let’s add another 2000 for the food cost while traveling to and from.
Compare Budget: Total Cost of Traveling, Lodging, and Food for Visiting Thanedar
Via self driven petrol car
| 3328+ 17600+ 2000
| = 22928/4 = Rs. 5732 per person
|
---|---|---|
Via self driven diesel car
| 2120+ 17600+ 2000
| = 21720/4 = Rs. 5430 per person
|
Let’s assume it comes to around Rs. 6500 (approximately 150
dollars) per person including any miscellaneous charges for the travel, so what
do you think, can you show me any other perfect budget friendly vacation near Delhi. The most important
thing which me and my family enjoyed about this place was its being pocket
friendly. The food was average but the price was reasonable, so the next time
you visit Delhi
and wish to visit nearby attractions on a low budget, put Thanedar in your
budget travel itinerary. It’s also the best weekend destination from Delhi for people with
families and kids. If you also want to spend a few weeks there, Thanedar is the perfect place for frugal living, saving you money more than what you save in your own country.
