Top Consignment Shops in the Midwest | Geneva Lake, Wisconsin

Updated on November 24, 2014

One of the best kept secrets in the Midwest is the premier resort towns around Geneva Lake - the towns of Williams Bay, Fontana, Delavan and Lake Geneva offer some of the best values in upscale clothing - consignment shops.

Interestingly, each consignment shop has a different focus. One is fantastic for fur coats, another is exceptional for St. John items and other top designers, one even specializes in Harley Davidson wear.

I love consignment shops because they are a step above a garage sale. They offer great savings but the consignment shops have organized the items and ferreted out the lesser quality items. My time is valuable and finding a balance between the time spent hunting and the quality is important to me. Consignment or resale shops offer allot of value.

I have shopped consignment shops my entire career. My co-workers initially were aghast but then at lunch time they gave it a try to lo and behold they too were sold!

Top consignment shops in the Midwest - the very best stores - the best bargain and much more! Learn who has a fabulous selection of furs, who has most designer clothing and who has the $5 buys and much more!

Journey with me as we visit some of the top consignment shops in the Midwestern United States, a short drive from the Western suburbs of Chicago, a short drive from the City of Chicago. A drive that is worth your effort for an afternoon of shopping fun. I would recommend dove tailing your journey with a trip for ice cream and/or a hike around the beautiful lakefront of Geneva Lake.

I know, I know, you would never think of Goodwill. This one surprised me too. I had lived in Lake Geneva for nearly two years, had visited on a regular basis for decades and it wasn't until I ran into a group of friends in the neighboring town of Delavan that I learned that this Goodwill is different. From Chicago ans, it is a little further - Delavan is on the west side of Geneva Lake but it is worth the time and effort IF you are willing to hunt.

Like all consignment shops, resale shops, you must keep an open mind. I have had superb finds for just $5. You see the prices are no different but the quality in many cases for this specific location is different.

By the way, the Green Bay Goodwill store is the same way. Yes, I know I shop all over the Midwest - Illinois to Wisconsin and even the Green Bay area. The Green Bay store is said to have many items from the family members of the Packer employees. The Habitat for Humanity Re-purpose Store in Green Bay is outstanding but that is the only Habitat Store I have had the opportunity to visit.

Upscale Consignment and Vintage

This store is simply charming. I would recommend not stopping at Starbucks but do plan on stopping here for a cup of java and perhaps a treat. Yes, right in the store they have coffee and treats. This store offers allot of vintage clothing - very high end, very high quality.

Additionally, sprinkled into this store is more than just clothing. You will find Grandmother's fine porcelain and lace for your dining table.

Come prepared to be enchanted with this store.

As you head out, check out the Green Grocer across the street - fabulous groceries - not your big box store items.

And then, as if that weren't enough, I would take a walk by the water's edge and then plan on staying for dinner at one of my favorite restaurants - Cafe Calemari. Yes, I am biased, I had my wedding reception there and one of the managers was a student in my communication class that I taught at the local university.

If a white table linen evening is not on your budget, do check out Skips. They are a little bit hard to find at first but absolutely delightful for burgers, shakes and all that fun food feasting.

Williams Bay beach is populated. So if you go during the summer, plan on taking some time for parking.

It is not very often that you find this level of quality at a consignment store. If you love St. John and your wallet doesn't allow you to even dream, open up the wallet and start dreaming - this store makes it within reach. Still expensive but pennies on the full retail price.

The quality of the items here are exceptional. Take time to look through the display cases for some of the world's finest costume jewelry from top designers such as Chanel and St. John.

This small store turns their inventory very quickly so be sure to check back frequently.

While you are roaming - the Fontana Grill across the street offers some of the world's best BBQ. The BBQ quesadilla is my favorite. Take in the beautiful waterfront right at the marina.

The lakefront of beautiful Geneva Lake is right around the corner from the sheltered bay at the Abbey Resort.

If you love real fur, before you invest, you must check out this unique consignment store. It is not small but it is packed. During fur season you will be stunned. Everything in fur is here - long, short, very formal, casual to even a little eccentric. This shop literally has it all - purses, clothing, furs, evening gowns and even shoes.

Oh, I almost forgot they also offer a huge line of Harley Davidson - told you they offered it all. Fun store right downtown Lake Geneva.

If you are visiting with male friends, send them to the new memorabolia store or the toy store which also offers allot of sporting goods. There is simply something for everyone.

Warning - popular place and parking is challenging. Have your quarters ready for the meters. This consignment shop does offer parking - very limited for customers only - so be prepared and shop early.

Geneva Lake - Value and Variety in Consignment Shops

As we have journeyed around the lake, we have visited several different communities. At first I found all the town names confusing. I hope the maps help you discern the subtle differences. The 5,000 acre lake is named "Geneva Lake" and several small communities reside on the beautiful waters including Fontana, Williams Bay and the city of Lake Geneva. While the lake is a natural resource, the consignment stores are an exceptional man-made gem that exceeds our expectations in both value and variety.

Each consignment shop offers something unique to its collection. I highly recommend visiting each one and finding your own favorites. The time is a commitment but many of the items are often a step back into time or of the highest quality. These shop owners pride themselves upon their quality. Best yet, each shop exudes a different character. Some are filled with fur, some with vintage, some with St. John, some with antique lace and porcelain. Enjoy the values, the quality but most of all have fun and enjoy the hunt!

Thanks for the information. I marked you up on this one. A lot of people in Rockford, IL, have homes up on the Lake, and travel weekly on weekends to enjoy the area. Even though a lot of people are out a work in the area in Northern Illinois, there are still a lot of people with money. Women who like to keep with the latest styles each season will often put their clothes in the resale shops. I am going to check out the buys!

This is a great hub! I'm voting it up and useful and a few other things. I've never been to Wisconsin, though it's on my list :)

      Nan Mynatt,

You are right - Rockfordites frequent Lake Geneva - it is not just the western suburbs of Chicago. So glad you enjoyed it - hope you find some great buys.

Great hub, wish we had a good consignment shop but the only one near me is outrageous, but luckily here it is almost Thanksgiving and I am still going to yard sales and luckily find plenty of name brand things. More than I can find at the consignment shop really, that smells like the Goodwill, like they should do a laundry, so you are lucky. I have a friend in Chicago though, I will pass this on to her. Good hub, it deserves an up, useful and interesting.

      Jackie Lynnley,

I was at a wonderful store the other day and the owner must be a cat lover and the smell was distinctive. Charcoal is an inexpensive way to alleviate the smell. I know what you mean about the Goodwill - some are troubled by that stagnant smell. Perhaps if they set out boxes of c charcoal at night (removed of course before the shoppers appeared) the smell could be helped. We have an aging populace and the old age smell is atrocious. Store keepers must be conscious of that smell. The plain charcoal worked great in my basement when I rehabbed my home - cheap and absorbs smells - the bag is less than $5 - much cheaper than trying to cover the smell and better - charcoal absorbs the smell.

Sorry for the long note, you hit an important point.

Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing.

      ethel smith,

The maps that Google and Hub Pages provide allow for a fantastic visual. I am a visual learner so these geographic references are most helpful.

Goldie, I agree that consignment shops are nice in part because they are a step above a garage sale. A bit classier... I hear they are doing better, along with thrift stores during these uncertain economic times we have been having in the USA. I found that interesting. Thanks for sharing :)

      oceansunsets,

So many people love garage sales and yet won't consider a consignment shop. I enjoy the consignment shops so much better - classier is perhaps a good way to describe it. I find they are more consistent. I don't mind hunting but I wish to see all the choices - the choices the consignment shop offers for me is a big item. I enjoy small boutiques but the large department stores is my first preference. I guess that is why I love shopping on the Internet so much, the variety is literally global. This year I have purchased items from both China and Canada. IF I had money the UK items on eBay are simply outstanding - I can tallied in those online storefronts sadly for hours. Speaking of which - off to eBay to check my watch list - thanks for stopping by.
