What Are Vital Steps to Pass Bank Exams?

Indian Institute of Banking and Finance (IIBF) provides special prospects by offering courses in Finance and Banking stream. It offers many courses to enhance and upgrade the knowledge and skills of banking experts. These courses provide theoretical as well as practical knowledge. It helps to streamline with diverse RBI policies and banking systems.

1) Basics

Indian Institute of Banking and Finance conducts many exams to educate bankers. It enhances their knowledge and brushes up their skills and abilities. One-time ordinary membership fees to join the institute is just 1700/- rupees. However, fees to appear in Junior Associate exam are as follows.

  • 2400/- rupees for the first attempt.
  • 1000/- rupees for a later attempt.

Dealing with public money is tricky and it requires applicable knowledge and due diligence to carry out all transactions efficiently. Thus keeping these aspects into concern, the Reserve Bank of India has established this institute. It conducts varied exams for bankers and rewards them with a certificate after they qualify for the exam. Banking professionals having experience of up to two years in any financial institution can apply for this exam. Most of the banks notify their employees to appear in IIBF exams. They also reimburse the exam fees on qualifying their exams. Employees also get increments and promotions once they have cleared the exam.

2) Syllabus

The Junior Associate exam consists of three papers. These papers are mentioned below -

  • Principle and practice of bankers.
  • Finance and accounting for the bankers.

  • Legal and regulatory aspects of banking.

Each subject has 120 questions of 100 marks, consisting of one, two and five-mark questions. In order to crack the exam, candidates should score 45 marks out of 100 in each subject. Also, their aggregate score must be 150 out of 300, i.e. 50%.

Exams are conducted in an online mode, on Sundays or Bank holidays. This is because candidates do not have to take leave from their job to appear for the exams. The time duration for each subject is two hours. Within this time duration students have to attempt all the questions and submit their online exam.

3) Application

Prerequisite for registration -

  • A Bachelor's degree from a recognized institute.

  • A career in the banking sector.

After fulfilling the above criteria, get to register for the Junior Associate exam. Exams are conducted twice in a year i.e in June and November month. Appearing for this examination in June's month is highly recommended. After clearing the Junior Associate exam one can prepare and appear for a Certified Associate exam. To qualify the Junior Associate exam in the first attempt, create a proper schedule for exam preparation.

Always follow your routine on a routine basis. Choose a peaceful place to study in order to stay focused on learning. Applicants are allowed to use battery-operated portable calculators with up to six functions, twelve digits and up to two memories. Aspirants are not allowed to use a scientific calculator in the exam.

4) Resources

Search for some teaching channels on YouTube and watch a few demo lectures. The lectures available will help you to know many mentors teaching patterns. If, the lectures are worthwhile then subscribe to those channels. Note down all the valid and informative points so that it can be easily accessible while preparing for the exams.

Students should start preparing for the exams from the very first day once enrolled. This will help candidates in completing the syllabus in advance, and they will find time for revision as well.

Read and clear all the concepts thoroughly as it will help the aspirants to retain the topic in their mind during the examination. Refer to the institute's published and elaborated study material which is available on the portal. Before appearing for the exams candidates should practice some mock-tests paper. It is important to gain practical exposure to the exam pattern.

5) Healthy Routine

One must have healthy meals and should avoid any kind of junk food during preparations for the examination. Also, drink an adequate quantity of water while preparing for the exams. Don’t eat heavy food items as you will feel lazy and dull after that.

Sleep for at least 6-7 hours before the examination day as this will relax your mind and body. With proper sleep and a relaxed mind, aspirants will feel fresh and stay focused on the examination day. With a smart and consistent study plan, students can qualify the exam in the first attempt. If not, then one can re-appear for the next cycle of exams. But it will be a remarkable success if cleared at the first attempt because it will save a lot of time, energy, and money.

6) Do's and Don't

  • Arrive at the exam centre fifteen minutes before the examination starts.
  • Search your room number and seat number allotted, from the chart on the notice board.
  • Carry Hall Ticket or Admit Card issued by the Institute along with an identity proof.
  • Don't carry smartphones or any other electronic gadgets with you on the computer lab as it is strictly banned.
  • There will be enough time to read and answer all the questions. Hence, do not skip to attempt any question.
  • Don't rush out of the class by submitting paper early. If you have attempted all the questions, then use the free time to recheck doubts.

7) Evaluation

After submitting exams, the result will display immediately on the screen. Also, the institute sends a provisional scorecard to registered email ID within 3 days. The official result will be announced after 1 month on the official website of the institute. Exam Result can be accessed by registration number and date of birth. Post successful qualification the final certificate will be published on the official website within one month. Always think positive to get assured results.


The banks adhering to Indian Banking Association Guidelines have to update the pay structure and other benefits of the employees who have cleared this examination. After qualifying Junior Associate and Certified Associate Exams, employees are promoted in major verticals such as foreign exchange divisions or treasury bureaus in their organisations and are entitled to receive increments in their salary.
