Of Collectivist Society

Updated on September 3, 2012

A craven universal creature

Collective so they speak;

The individual extinguished,

Forever and complete.

Invention cedes a thought

And lays it then in waste;

Success means a ton of brass

Courted in a vase.

Together like a swarm

‘Round death and cause profane;

They languish there predated,

For pride and power's gain.

Then circumvent emotion

For curse and despot spoil,

To covet others’ might God swears,

We're destined all to toil.

    Moonfroth, where in the poem do I refer to the U.S. or democrats? I am writing about "collectivism" versus "individualism," which has been an agrument among philosophers for eons. Any society that usurps the individual will be a dark one, that is all. You ought to read "The Road to Serfdom" by Hayek. He wrote about the results of collectivism in the same light. That you wrote of dark images in your poems and "gloom" on occasion never distracted me from your greater message. I changed the title.

    Cynthia -- I think, I KNOW, you would enjoy a little-known Russian novel called WE, by (last name) Zamiatin. The book was written in the early 1920s, so it PRE-dates both "Brave New World" and "1984"--the two best-known, and very grim, futuristic novels. The "ultimate solution" in WE makes the other two novelsa look like kindergarten primers. I hope you can track down a copy of WE.

    I guess you see no light at the end of the tunnel? No reason to hope that America might come up with the strategies to haul itself out of the morass? Your unremitting gloom is difficult to bear, and I remain unconvinced that the Democrats are trying to destroy individualism and free spirits in America today. Again, what has been happening to you personally is utterly reprehensible, but does that generalize to the authorities at large?
