Act Like A Lady? Just What Do You Mean, Congressman West?

Updated on July 22, 2011

Allen West On Acting Like A Lady!

I was offended by GOP Congressman Allen West's email to Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D). As a woman, I was mortified that a fellow elected representative would act in such a disrespectful manner to his fellow colleague. Part of the email is reprinted here:

" Look, Debbie, I understand that I after I departed the House floor you directed your floor speech comments directly towards me. Let me make myself perfectly clear, you want a personal fight, I am happy to oblige. You are the most vile, unprofessional and despicable member of the US House of Representatives. If you have something to say to me, stop being a coward and say it to my face, otherwise, shut the heck up."

Additionally West said that Ms. Wasserman-Schultz has proven that "you are not a lady" and "shall not be afforded due respect from me!!" He also sent copies of the email to several members of the House and Senate "alerting them to her heinous characterless behavior!"

Mr. West, Just How Is A Lady Supposed To Act?

Mr. West,

Please inform me what is required when 'acting like a lady'? Give me the benefit of your expertise, because obviously, you know more than I do. I am a woman, but obviously I have missed the charm school classes. And by calling someone 'vile', what is it that you hope to accomplish?

I heard Ms Wasserman's speech on the floor of the House. I found it neither vile or rude in any manner. The Congresswoman simply pointed out the difference between your views and hers. She did go a little bit further when she questioned your decision to abandon the needs of the Senior population in your district. But, if you can defend that position, it should not be a problem.

Are you, by way of your email, suggesting that 'ladies' should remain silent? 'Ladies' should defer to your opinions without question? I don't know where you have been, Mr. West, but 'ladies' vote, have opinions and are free to express them. If you find that distasteful, vile, despicable or unprofessional, then that is a problem that you should come to terms with. Seek professional help, if you must, but in any event, seek help!

P.S. I will be waiting for your guidelines on "How To Act Like A Lady!"

Allen West Needs To Act Like A Congressman, Not A Misogynist!

Regardless of political persuasion, Mr. West must step back, examine the roots of his temper tantrum and deal with the issues, period!

I have emailed Congressman West. I received a generic email thanking me for contacting him, but it gave no explanation for the insulting and clearly unprofessional manner in which he has approached and attacked a female colleague. He must apologize!

Jillian, Maybe you missed the point here I think Mr West was attempting in his own fumbling way to come out of the closet! He obviously knows more on how to be a "lady" then the Congresswoman. I think that there are many GOP members that are trying to come out of the closet since they know better than most women that abortion is a sin also. The GOP mkaes it pretty clear that they are bunch of raving Queens trying to be women and failing miserably. So don't be too hard on those dears, they're just trapped in mens bodys.

Awesome e-mail to Rep. West, Jillian. Welcome back for a bit to HubPages. I am still writing my articles here first. I believe Rep. Allen West with his military background and Tea Party arrogant pedigree felt that he must attack anyone to continue to prove his masculinity. Rep. Wasserman-Schultz is one of the most respected members of the House and still he sent this vile e-mail. She responded on TV in a measured way in keeping with her position of leadership in the House and as the leader of the Democratic party. Luckily he is in a Democratic leaning district and this should seal his defeat next year.

    Dear Peter,

You always make me laugh! No exception here! I am waiting for the guidelines, though! I don't think that he will send them to me or to anyone else who requests them. I have never heard Congressman Wasserman-Schultz be rude or become personal. She is very strong with her attacks based on issues, but never personal.

As you and I both know because we have experienced it, women have to be strong and they must be treated as equals. Women have just as much to offer as men...

    Dear Howard,

You received a compliment from the editor-in-chief of our new home away from home. Talked to him yesterday- he thinks that you and Fay are awesome!

As for Mr. West, I was aware of his military background, but if he was still a member of the Armed Services, today, the behavior that he exhibited would be grounds for disciplinary action. I give him no excuses!

Hey Jillian, Awesome Hub, voted up. Conservatives seem to like the idea of a woman being submissive to their husband, now they just want submission.

Bachmann's "submitted" to her husband and became a lawyer, now she wants to be president. Just what we need is a president who is submissive to male dominance.

    Glad you're back!

    Thank you, my favorite chef!

Back part-time. I miss everyone, but am thoroughly enjoying my other home! For most political articles, they seem to have a wider circulation. One recent article had 5000 views...Can't fight with that if you want to get a message out!

But, yes, the comment made by West made me feel that he does not think of his female colleagues as equals.

You are giving West too much credit, he is a rightwing buffoon. There was nothing in Wasserman-Schultz comments that could merit that response from him. It proves one thing conclusively, that the rightwinged beast comes in all shapes and colors. As always, great hub, thanks Jillian.

Another great blog, short; sweet; and politely straight to the jugular. He is obviously an old school politician, long on bravado and short on substance.

If you get the "guidelines" please be sure to publish them.

I have a feeling that I am going to be waiting a very long time, but believe me- will publish them!
