An Old Soldiers View | Close GITMO Now!

Visit Sunny Alaska, You'll never want to leave!!

Well here we are it’s been a year since president Obama signed the Executive Order to close the Terrorist Holding Facility on GITMO. I finally have come to the conclusion that it may in fact be a good idea. Now the problem that arose after President Obama signed the order was, “Well where do you put these guys?” The administration came up with a little used prison near Thomasville Illinois.. I and many others don’t think that’s necessarily a good idea. Even though it’s out in the country and relatively secure, from an insurgent point of view the fact that it’s approachable by land makes it a possible target for a deep penetration rescue mission staged say through Mexico or Canada.

Now lots of folks world wide have also said GITMO is a recruiting tool for Al Queada. Well I think that’s a load of hoooey and think that the more likely recruiting tool here is the idea “Hey look even if you get caught you’ll be able to chill at GITMO in tropic breezes and plenty of comfort. You’ll get three hots and a cot and regular showers and prayer times, even a new Koran courtesy of the US Taxpayer! Life will be good.”

After all we were attacked many times before GITMO and will be after we move it. The fact that we have an enemy POW camp for these guys should be a mute point. So instead of giving these folks a recruiting aid, lets go ahead and move it to a place that might well inspire a bit of fear instead.

I therefore propose we move GITMO to one of the two Islands indicated on the attached map. We could also establish the Federal Court, Attorney Gen Holder wants these guys tried in; right there on the island. No need to clog up New York, would well reduce costs as you’d already have snipers in the Towers. The assigned staff could easily add an igloo or two for defense attorneys as well. Wouldn’t need too serious a fence and in fact you could anchor a medium size boat say half a mile off shore and tell the detainees, any time you want to go just let us know and we’ll let you swim for it! In fact if we find these guys innocent, well hey we could just let them go! Give $50 and a new suit and shove ‘em out the gate. See ya!

Two New Locations for GITMO
Two New Locations for GITMO

Now to prevent rescue efforts it is easy to install the necessary radar to monitor the ocean around the island. Staffing would probably be about the same as GITMO is now but hey make it a short tour for the MP’s, we do after all have Military Installations in Alaska already so this would present no particular difficulty in fact I would bet that even given the hardships you’d have plenty of Abu Ghraib vets ready to volunteer for the duty.

No matter how you look at it, this is and idea that should be seriously considered on the merits stated above and it would in fact be a better use of our tax dollars than the one in Illinois. Might actually serve as a deterrent. Just an Old Soldiers Thoughts…

PM - I think this could pick up steam if it stays out there long enough and Eric Holder keeps doing what he's doing!! Thanks! :D

nah, I KNEW there was a clever punch coming as soon as I read the title!

I did for a second think you were maybe going to suggest Alcatraz. Not quite as cold though. Then too, you have to worry about the "flower children" trying to row a boat out there and rescue them ..

I like your idea, we could even let them choose which of the two islands they wanted to live on. Never let it be said that we're not a gracious host! :)

great hub, sounds like a good idea, an island off the shore of alaska, the climate is inhospitable and no one would try and escape. You should send your hub or a letter to the Justice dept or the white house office office of public engagement. I had not thought about all the backlash of having it deep in America which may encourage those so inclined to attack to set them free.

An island in the middle of the Bering Sea has to be the most brilliant idea I have ever heard. I think the desert is too good for a terrorist. There is no way someone could escape and the cold would certainly deter them from even going outside. That is the most inhospitable place in the whole world.

I agree with AIM you are smarter than most of the politicians that I have ever met. I'll back you for sure. Great Hub I enjoyed it.

Brilliant idea, it makes perfect sense. Are the waters filled with man-eating sharks, because that would be built in security?

Big John - I had a buddy who was stationed on Adak (Aleution Islands) during WW-2. He told me that the only thing they had to look forward to was the landing of the "beer boat" once a month. He said they all went nuts because the place was pure boredom, a rain and fog-soaked rock in the middle of nothing, and freezing cold all the time. The terrorists would have one big advantage, however. They are all already nuts. Nice article, Friend !

Springboard - Got to clear something up here, I have never been a marine, I am a retired Simple Old Soldier, as for my brains they have been that way for some time, how else am i supposed to see things through my twisted lens of life?

Glad you liked it though and lets circulate it to our elected officials and get them on the bandwagon eh? Thanks!!

I was relieved to read on, because the title suggested to me I was inadvertently following a nut. I thought, close GITMO? A former marine? An American patriot? Close GITMO?

Must have been some strange gasses that got sniffed up in a place or two defending the country that suddenly took hold and fried your brains to an unrecognizable goo.

But no. I think you've got something actually. This is not a bad idea at all. Swim for it if you wanna go. You could even give them a life preserver. I don't think they'd get very far considering the 30-40 degree water might pose a bit of a problem for them. And 50 cal...I never thought of the whales.

      Very relieved indeed. ;)

Fabulous idea! I don't like them being placed anywhere in the continental US. Then, you have visitors, US citizens receiving US citizen, more cost to taxpayers, possible excapes which makes your plan perfect1
