Cory Aquino: An Icon of Democracy
(January 25, 1933 – August 1, 2009)
Cory Aquino – considered as the heroine of the Philippine People Power. She was born on January 25, 1933, the sixth among the eight siblings of Jose Cojoangco of Tarlac. The Cojoangcos were known to be members of a wealthy landowning family prominent in politics.
She was the first Filipino woman who run for president and achieved her victory after the snap election after the Marcos Regime. She was president from 1986 up to 1992 and remembered as the woman in yellow who removed Marcos from his seat in 1986. She took all the challenge facing all the complexities that will come of being the president. She was thinking of the welfare and the goodness neither for herself nor for her family but for the entire Filipino community.
She shed the housewife’s apron only after her politician husband, the opposition leader Benigno Aquino, was assassinated at Manila international airport in 1983 on his return from exile in the United States.
