Updated on July 10, 2011

The death of Cory Aquino

Cory Aquino: An Icon of Democracy

(January 25, 1933 – August 1, 2009)

Cory Aquino – considered as the heroine of the Philippine People Power. She was born on January 25, 1933, the sixth among the eight siblings of Jose Cojoangco of Tarlac. The Cojoangcos were known to be members of a wealthy landowning family prominent in politics.

She was the first Filipino woman who run for president and achieved her victory after the snap election after the Marcos Regime. She was president from 1986 up to 1992 and remembered as the woman in yellow who removed Marcos from his seat in 1986. She took all the challenge facing all the complexities that will come of being the president. She was thinking of the welfare and the goodness neither for herself nor for her family but for the entire Filipino community.

She shed the housewife’s apron only after her politician husband, the opposition leader Benigno Aquino, was assassinated at Manila international airport in 1983 on his return from exile in the United States.

THE SAD TRUTH: Cory died due to cardiac respiratory arrest

Last march 24, 2008 there was news that Cory Aquino has a colon cancer, isang sakit sa bituka. The former president is currently 76 years old but her daughter Kris Aquino gave her full support to her Mother. The Filipinos continue to offer prayer for our beloved Cory Aquino. Masses are offered in the different places around the country. The sad reality had happened. At 3:18 am our beloved former President died due to cardio-respiratory arrest at the MakatiMedicalCenter. Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aqunio III confirmed about the incident about 5 o’clock in the morning outside the hospital. She died at the age of 76.

Noynoy Aquino’s statement:

"Our mother peacefully passed away at 3:18 a.m., August 1, 2009, of cardio-respiratory arrest.“She would have wanted to thank each and every one of you for all the prayers and your continued love and support. It was her wish for all of us to pray for one another and for our country.“Hinihiling po ng aming pamilya ang kaunting panahon para makasama namin ang aming mahal na ina.“Later today, we will be announcing further details of her wake para sa lahat ng ating mga minamahal na kababayan na nais magbigay ng respeto sa aming ina. Maraming salamat po.”

For all the things and endless effort that you have given to all filipinos all we can say is  MARAMING SALAMAT PRES. CORY AQUINO.

Thank you for writing this. Tita Cory will live in our hearts forever.

Since I was not able to go out during her funeral, I sat glued to our tv for the whole day and followed the whole proceedings until the last coverage. The outpouring of love was really amazing. People lined up in the streets under pouring rain and simply waited for hours just to catch a glimpse of the funeral procession. Amazing!
