The Changing Culture in Washington
The culture in Washington is getting a dose of reality from the Trump administration and it will be a change that has long been overdue. The culture of continuing to pass budgets while not having the money to pay for all the details must stop. The biggest problem is that the political parties in Congress at both the executive department level and the legislative branch have been butting heads in developing solutions to resolve issues which have plagued our country for years. It is about time that elected and appointed individuals in the federal government start being a support function not a dictating function.
The purpose of the federal government as stipulated in the Constitution is to be a support organization. The list of responsibilities and those the government has absorbed identify this fact. There are many fine individuals in the federal government that take their responsibilities seriously but we never hear from them only their bosses who at times in some entities throw the Constitution under the bus.
One aspect of taking a position in the federal government is they pledge to support and honor the Constitution but in many cases it has become just words on paper. Decisions by Congress and the Executive Department and their agencies with the philosophy that government knows best is flawed. This has been the problem for years and this culture is now changing with the current administration. .
Changing the culture in Washington starts with putting the right individuals in charge and though there have been some changes from the original individuals supporting Trump the changes taking place are good for our country. Making the right decisions for the country has been a battle between the Executive Department and Congress. As stated earlier elected individuals have sworn an oath to support the Constitution and some are doing just that. The problem is these individuals are not in the majority in the House of Representatives. Political ideology which contradicts the content of the Constitution will be gone. The phrase political ideology is one which we have heard over and over again over the years but the ideology should reflect the Constitution and the needs of all citizens across this great country.
In addition to those who will be part of the executive department and their agencies we must look at Congress and both political parties. It is time for all elected senators and representatives to realize they need to understand the content of the Constitution and make decisions and create legislation in conformance with the Constitution.
Donald Trump is an individual who has never held public office and like it has been said before sometimes it takes the eyes of someone who has not been a part of politics to make suggestions to resolve the critical issues facing our country. It is clear that the approaches taken by both political parties in past administrations has not resolved any issues and in some cases they have left it up to future legislative sessions to tackle them.
Changing the present culture in the federal government has not been easy but elected officials must remember one important thing they were sent there by the voters. Individuals are there to serve the people and the people have spoken when they elected Trump. Each election year the entire House of Representatives and 1/3 of the Senate is up for election. Decisions made by all those who serve in the federal government will be under examination by the voters and they should carefully weigh their decisions. If it is good for America they should support legislation before them and if they are not then make suggestions to improve them. It should not be about party policy but the Constitution and the needs of the country.
Our country is a great country full of intelligent individuals who have the knowledge and expertise to provide input to solving the problems facing our country. Donald Trump has been a businessman for years and this experience will serve him well during his administration. The problem is the federal government has not been operating like a business. Businesses cannot spend more than they take in and government should not do it as well. Evaluating proposals put forth by the Trump administration should be fair by both political parties it should not reject any proposal before it is read and discussed. I am not saying that everything should be accepted as is but if either party or individuals disagree with approaches being submitted to Congress they should provide input to enhance the approaches to resolve the issue being addressed.
