Conservatism vs Liberalism

Updated on October 28, 2014

Why I Lean Conservative

A few years back when Glenn Beck had a show, on Fox News Channel, I took a test to see if I was a Republican, Democrat or Libertarian. To my surprise I find that I am a Libertarian. I don't like the government interfering in my life or for that matter, in yours. My government should make sure that I can seek "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". Not tell me what kind of car I should drive, for example an electric car, not tell me how to heat my house, for example solar panels or what insurance I need, for example The affordable Care Act.

I am also a Christian, which sometimes interferes with my Libertarian beliefs. Take abortion, for an example. I don't think anyone should have an abortion. I believe in the sanctity of life and that life starts at inception, not when you come out of the womb. On the other hand, I don't believe the government should be involved with a decision that each and every woman must make for herself and her body. That is between her and her god. With that said, I shutter at the slaughter of all these helpless babies. Where is their voice?

As you can probably tell, I lean right or conservative. Ecclesiastes 10:2 says "The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left"....just sayin'

So, the conservative thinks the government should be as small as possible and interfere in our lives as little as possible. The liberal thinks the government should be big, that the government can make better decisions for us than we can.

My America

Yes, My America

The America I see is the one that provides opportunity for all. It is not about a skin color or a race of people. Yes, the blacks were treated horribly under the slavery laws and yes the Japanese were put in concentration camps during World War II. All terrible but we have turned the page on those days and I truly believe that if you are honest, hard working and get some education you can succeed in anything you set your mind to doing no matter the color of your skin or gender.

I'm not blind to the fact that there are still racist in the United States, of course there are. Not only to the blacks but also to the Jews, Hispanics and Asians. But we are one people. We are Americans. All countries have their "stupids". But Americans on the whole are a great people full of love and understanding for their fellow man.

I am so sick and tired of the media pundits telling us how racists we are. For heaven's sake we have a black man in the White House. If you don't agree with the Presidents liberal views you are a racist. NO. I don't care what color the President is....I don't like his liberal agenda. Period. End of sentence.

Conservatives believe in the free market and capitalism. Liberals believe in wealth distribution. Another reason why I am a conservative. I don't think I should have to pay for someone's rent, groceries or cable bill when they are healthy and able to work but choose not to. This government has gotten so big they can't even distinguish between the person who really needs a lift up and the person who is looking for a hand out. Shameful.

Which Way do you Lean?

Do you consider your self Conservative or Liberal?

Let's take on government waste

Most of us pay taxes and it would be comforting to know that our tax money is spent wisely. However, our government has gotten so large it can't keep track of who has the money, where did it go and are too many people doing the same thing. Geez!

Here are a few examples:

From the Heritage Foundation

1. $200,000 for tattoo removal program in Mission Hills, California

2. $2.5 billion in "stimulus" (we could talk about that failure but I won't) money taken by the Department of Agriculture for broadband internet was wasted.

3. The National Institute of Health spends $1.3 million a month, yes a MONTH, to rent a lab that it can't use.

4. Washington spent $1.8 million to help build a private golf course in Atlanta, Georgia

5. The Conservation Reserve Program pays farmers $2 billion annually not to farm their land.

From The Economic Collapse Blog:

1. Department of Agriculture gave the University of New Hampshire $700,000 to study methane gas emissions from dairy cows. Yes cow farts.

2. National Institute of Health spent $442,340 to study the behavior of male prostitutes in Vietnam.

3. $18 million of our tax dollars went for a "museum of neon signs" in Las Vegas, Nevada

From Senator Tom Coburn's Wastebook (he publishes this annually)

1. $325,525 spent by the National Institute of Health on a study to find the happiest marriages were the ones where wives were able to calm down quickly during the conflict.

2. January 2013 Congress passed a bill to provide $60.4 Billion for the areas devastated by hurricane Sandy. Instead of rushing aid to the victims, state level officials in New York and New Jersey spent the money on TV ads for tourism.

3. The Department of Health and Human Resources have spent $379 Million (and counting) to build and promote and insurance plan that few want and a website that doesn't work.

If these examples aren't enough to make blood shoot out of your eyes or make the hair on the back of your neck stand up....well, I don't know what will. People this is our money. I don't know about you but I have worked hard for my paycheck. I don't mind paying taxes but I need to know that my tax dollar is being spent wisely and efficiently and this sure doesn't look like it to me.

Gun Laws

Another thing that drives me absolutely crazy.. Liberals would take away the 2nd Amendment. The right to bare arms. Just use a little common sense Please.

So you take away all of the law abiding people's firearms. Then what? Do you think the criminals are going to obey the laws and turn in their guns? Well, if you do I have a piece of the Mackinaw Bridge I'd like to sell you. Of course criminals are not going to turn in their illegal guns. So who is going to have the guns? All the crazies. Is that really what you want?

We are suppose to be able to protect our families and our homes. The average time it takes to have police respond to your call for help is 20 minutes. How much havoc do you think a criminal can cause in 20 minutes?

How many times have I heard someone say "if I would have had my (legal) gun in the restaurant I could have saved some lives. But I had to leave it in the car because of the rules of the restaurant". That's just crazy. Look at Chicago with the strongest gun laws on the planet and yet they are number 1 in murders per capita of people. Shameful.

Too many crazies out there these days. I say carry. Carry legal but carry.

Where do you stand on gun control

Are you for or against gun control

U.S. Code Title 8, Section 1325 - Any alien who (1) enters or attempts to enter the United States at any time or place other than as designated by immigration officers, or (2) eludes examination or inspection by immigration officers shall for the first commission of any such offense, be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than 6 months, or both, and, for a subsequent commission of any such offence, be fined under title 18, or imprisoned not more than 2 years, or both. Why is this being ignored by our officials???

At one time you had to apply for citizenship, pass a test, swear an oath of allegiance, learn our history and learn our language. If you've forgotten it's English. After you have earned your citizenship the sky was the limit. No one came looking for a hand out or for the government to take care of them. They came with the thought of being free. Free to worship as they wished, free to work and earn a living, free to go to school....plain and simply the land of freedom. These immigrants worked hard and that American dream came true for most of them.

Now we have people crossing our borders in such numbers we don't know who is here. Now people come but not with the thought of being Americans, not with integrating with our ways but somehow we are adapting to their nationality and background. How do I know? I make a phone call and it's press 1 for English press 2 for Spanish. We speak English here in America, that is our language. Our schools have to have special language instructors for the children that don't speak English. It's offensive to some children if an American student wears a shirt with the American flag on it. What the heck is happening to us?

This illegal influx is costing the tax payer (that's you and me) billions (that's billions with a B) of dollars each and every year. Now I know this sounds like I am against anyone who speaks Spanish. No I am not. All I am saying is that if you don't come here legally behind the other legal immigrants you shouldn't be here and I shouldn't be paying for your education, housing and medical bills. Get in line and come the proper way. And, once that happens learn the history of our great country and learn the language.

Conservatives want immigration but they want it done the right way. They want to know who is in our country and why. We have no clue how many terrorists, drug traffickers or rapists are here, our borders are porous. Seal the border first and foremost. Liberals want an open border. Come on in, the more the merrier. Even with the crisis at the border this past summer the liberals thought we should take care of any child who is looking for a better life. News flash: We can't save everybody.

** As a side note: In 2013 the Obama Administration released over 2000 illegals being held in jail for various criminal activities. They claim due to cost cuts they had to release these people but rest assured these people held no risk to the American people. Now USA Today magazine has discovered that some of these illegal criminals were being held for rape, kidnapping, murder and drug trafficking. How safe do you feel now?

Senator Bill Frist once said "A nation that can't secure its borders can't secure its destiny or administer its laws."

Open Border?

Do you think we should close the Southern border?

Voter ID

Here's another one that absolutely drives me bonkers. Conservatives believe in voter ID laws. That you should have to prove who you are before you are able to cast a vote. OMG how radical is that! Imagine to have to prove you are not a cartoon character, dead or illegal and not eligible to vote. We have to have an ID to board a plane, get a driver's license, to get married, enter a government building, go on a cruise (read my hub about cruise vacations), go to school and a bazillion other reasons.

Liberals on the other hand believe anyone that shows up at the voting booth should be allowed to vote and that getting an ID is to prohibitive. Are you kidding me?? That's why corruption happens at the voting booth. We discover that dead people are casting votes, that some people vote more than once and even some dogs have cast ballots. They say it is discriminating against the poor. What these liberals are telling the poor is that they are too dumb to get an if they don't all ready have one.

And speaking of voting. This absentee ballot is going way too far. This ballot should only be used if you are bedridden, hospitalized, in a nursing home, in the military or will be out of town on voting day. Otherwise get off your duff and go vote. It is a privilege to vote, exercise your right as a citizen of this great country. There are absolutely no excuses to not vote.

Looking for comments

I know some will not agree with my views and you are certainly entitled to your opinions. I'm a big girl and can take it. Let me know how you feel about any of these topics. Especially let me know if you are a conservative or a liberal and why.

wba108 I have to agree about our school system and what is being taught or should I say "not being taught". Our children don't know our history and even though it has been over 50 years since I have been in school I am still learning our history. I think every middle school child should have to see the movie "America: Imagine the world without her" by Dinesh D'Souza. A great historical documentary.

This is all music to my ears and something that should be known and understood to graduate from high school. Unfortunately our schools are turning out "little Lenin's" with all the left wing propaganda, instead of teaching true American history and the Constitution.

Yes. Jaw dropping. I've been watching the ignorance for several years and shouldn't be surprised by what some Americans think/ just have to shake your head and pray people will wake up.

Paul, you are so right about lack of education on political polices. People have little knowledge of our history and some have no knowledge of what is going on today. I've seen people being asked who our Vice President is and they don't know! Almost unbelievable.

I agree that the NRA interpretation of the 2nd Amendment has little in common with the actuial 2nd Amendment, and I agree that there are no politicians actually wishing to take away all guns...

I also have issues with the propaganda system that permeates our political life... the lack of education in our country is revealing how delicate democracy actually is...

I appreciate your comments. I agree that both Liberal and Conservative politicians but their "job" before what is best for the country and their most important goal is to stay in office. When you see all the money that is given to foreign nations (that don't even like us) we could have many wonderful programs here in the U.S.A. for our children. I'm not sure we are ready for a 3rd party. It seems to me that the Independent vote takes away from the Republican vote which leaves a Progressive in office and for me that defeats my vote. As for a politician that wants to take away about Rahm Emanuel in Chicago or the new mayor of New York, Mr. DeBlasio (not sure if I spelled that right, sorry). Not sure they want to take away ALL guns because they have body guards and I am sure the body guards carry. But, they don't want the citizens to carry, they believe in gun control and we call all see what the death rate is in Chicago.

I totally agree. I think Liberals have turned into Progressives and Progressives want wealth distribution. For me the Democratic party is no longer just liberal they have been taken over by the Progressives who might as well call themselves Socialists. And, for Progressives the answer to any problem is "throw money at it". Problem is it's the taxpayers money, not theirs.

You have bought into the liberal/conservative BS. The sole purpose of this is to control the American voters. Do a little research and you find that the same politicians that are against abortion do not want to feed school children who need it. I would love to live in a country that took care of the children. The 2nd amendment as described by the NRA has very little relationship the 2nd amendment in the constitution. Name a single politician who wants to take all the guns from US citizens. We should elect independents who will look at and discuss all solutions and pick the best one given the current circumstances. Of course that would mean putting America before Corporations and Washington, DC can't do that.

Traditionally Conservatives are the party of those who want less government and liberals are the party who want more government.

Reagan was a long time liberal Democrat who switched parties and became a Republican because the government was taxing him too much due to his high income.

People call them Rhino's or Republican in name only!

Apparently the belief is that they are still liberals. Liberals who still believe in big government but want others to pay for it. The problem with this thinking is the middle class tax payer always gets stuck with paying the bill. There are those who for whatever reason don't want a middle class. So,who is "left" ( pun intended) . The Rich!

Well said...though I would add that, in reference to abortion, we do make the murder of a post-birth person illegal, so why not a pre-birth person? I don't think that goes against a small government mindset...
