Earth to Progressives: Grow Some Stones Will You?

Updated on May 20, 2011

After every outrage that has been brought about by the GOP and the political right over the last 2 years, where are we? We have let the rightwing propaganda machine define the issues and sat idly by. We have through our apathy put the President in an untenable position to have to negotiate with Agent Orange and Scarecrow (Boehner and McConnell). We should have been enthusiastically supporting the President and the progressives during the midterms last fall. I can understand the resistance of the Fred Flintstone and Ralph Kramden types, but as progressives, we should know better.

Our adversaries are counting on our being distracted and letting them distort the facts to the point to what was once crystal clear has been convoluted with rightwing nonsense. We have clearly, as a nation, made a decision to elect Barack Obama president. If you were opposed to this and were willing to have misgivings about the change that we needed at the time, why didn’t you just vote for McCain?

This rightwing propaganda machine is of immense power and reach and can easily deceive the feeble minded into advocating positions clearly not in their best interests but in the interests of other unscrupulous people and entities. Our relative civility as progressives should not be confused as weakness. We must not be deceived; one should never bring a knife to a gunfight.

The adversary is dismantling the foundation of the entire middle class. Do we fiddle while Rome burns? If we do not have the courage of our convictions then we are the weak sniveling nerds they say we are. What else do you need to know? We have watched them attempt to unravel public employee unions in a grasp for raw power over its adversary. We knew from the beginning of President Obama’s term that they have been obstructionist to a man within Congress. We watch them complain about Obama’s health care program while Mr. Blow Dry (Romney) did the same thing in Massachussetts and something similar was embraced by rank and file GOP during the 1990’s. Check out Gingrich’s flip-flop. We see once they get into power that they move the focus from jobs to their ideological agenda. We see that they are not interested in the deficit as they want to continue endless subsidies to corporate America at the expense of all of the rest of us. Paul Ryan has no problem gutting Medicare for seniors as long as we save Thurston Howell and his scurvy crew. Should they not have skin in the game? So when a rightwinger throws out blatant insults and accusations are we going to go hide behind mama’s skirts.? They must be made to support their incendiary, bomb throwing statements at every turn. When you confront most of them, they will run like rabbits as they rarely have anything substantive to support their statements. Be aware of that and stand firm. So, don’t be a DINO, you are either part of the problem or part of the solution. Like Bill Mahr said a few weeks ago, the choice is between a friend that disappoints and an intractable enemy. So, what is your choice?

I am just commenting to make you be aware of what a notlabe encounter my friend's daughter gained going through your web site. She picked up a wide variety of pieces, which included how it is like to possess a marvelous teaching heart to make many more really easily gain knowledge of a variety of impossible topics. You undoubtedly did more than our expectations. Thanks for rendering the valuable, healthy, explanatory and also easy thoughts on that topic to Kate.

Hi, Jillian as always, it is a pleasure to hear from you and thanks again for your comments. They are truly "spot on" Our adversary looks to find every weakness and uses any method fair or foul to trip us up.

The President has been a little too conciliatory for my tastes, but the only alternative is endless gridlock, which ultimately reflects badly on him and that he will be blamed for. We all allowed ourselves to be "spooked" by the right when it wasn't just a few months before that the worse fiancial disaster in recent history occurred on their watch. As Bill Mahr says, what are they expert at? It certainly is not fiscal responsibility and sanity as Bush spent like a drunken sailor on liberty. They say that they are tough on defense, while Bush offered excuses and wrote off Bin Laden as inconsequential because he could not deliver results, who actually got him? This is the klutz crew that has everybody believing that they are the sharpest knives in the drawer!!

The only thing that I have seen from the GOP is obstruction, excuses and distraction from the true issues of our times. They talk about "taking us and the country back somewhere", back to what? If Gingrich represents the intellectual and ideological base of the GOP, we are all in trouble. This guy is truly the 'busy idiot' of our times, and he is so full of himself.

Hi, CP, We are all too complacent, even those of us who know better. We believe that these guys will negotiate and listen to reason. But, nothing can be further from the truth, they will burn down everything to have their way. They throw their verbal incidiaries into a crowded theatre and watch all the people scatter in panic leaving their common sense there along with purses and the unfinished popcorn.

The rightwingers has got it figured out

As always thank you for your observation

Yes, I am fond of Bill Mahr, who includes poignant political commentary as part of his program. I always look forward to his monologue after "New Rules". His satire is spot on. The problem is that we have too many Bill O'Reillys and Rush Limbaughs on the other side. Lobo, thanks for your imput

Greetings HS, thanks for your comment. They say that a week or month could be eternity in politics. I certainly hope that progressives remember what has happened and show their displeasure at the ballot box. So much can happen between now and November, 2012.

Happy to hear from you, Mr. Happy. I will have a look at your video link. Politics and politicians are by their nature unsavory, with me it is the lesser of two evils. That is the best we can do at this time. I have expressed dissapointment with Obama on being relatively lax with the financial markets people and pursuing a militarism course beyond what I hoped for once he was elected. But as I had stated in an earlier hub (Three Headed Serpent), militarism seems to be a given regardless of party affiliation. That is unfortunate. Not advocating conspiracy theories, walking away from that norm could cost your life and it may have been a factor in the murder of JFK, we can never for sure.

Don't think that I have not thought about it, the fact the we are 'being played' by both sides. If that is the case, we are doomed. It just seems that one advocate group is more blantant and anxious to push us over the precipice than the other. Thanks for weighing in with your comments.

      Dear Credence2,

What a beautiful and motivating piece you have offered us! If we can not stand up, we may as well just give it up and let the GOP have our country. You are right! We have no excuses. The GOP must be fought every step of the way!

May I say, I read the comments before I post, and Mr. Happy has it wrong. Obama was blocked at every turn by the GOP, as to Guantanamo, financially and media-wise. The GOP is handling those purse strings and Obama is not a dictator. He has only so much power. The GOP effectively blocked the funding required to close Guanatnamo. As for media, they pushed the population to be so fearful, that no one has stood behind the President on this issue. Without the people standing behind him, he can do very little.

Any thing Obama does, the GOP hates it, even if they first proposed it. If he breathes, the GOP is quick to point out that he is doing it the wrong way and then they relate it to his 'Kenyan' birthplace or some other idiotic thing that their base eats for breakfast.

We just have to keep hitting them, over and over. As for Progressives, we better start being alot stronger and alot more vocal. We just must not back down. We should start taking some pages from their playbooks!

Thank you for this, Credence! Remember this and tell everyone:

If you repeat a lie over and over again, you are a Republican!

Dear Credence2, you are so right. We progressives think of ourselves as being too civil to even refute the garbage the GOP/TP are espousing, but the average citizen either does not have the intelligence to discern truth from the fabricated stories they hear, or they do not care that their freedoms are being swiped from them. So it is up to those of us who do care and do have the intelligence to do the research to put a halt to this move towards plutocracy, before it is too late, if it is not already.

      Great hub.

Great Hub and I like to see Bill Mahr quoted - I think he is very insightful whatever the topic. He has a very rational mind, and it is a pity that such minds seem to be in such short supply since most of our present troubles would have been avoided if they were more plentiful.

Great Hub Credence2. The progressive left has been quiet for too long though I think it is changing now. The overreach of the new Republican Governors has mobilized them finally. The GOP in league with Corporate America is looking to take over all political speech in this country. They are going to destroy the middle class. It must end now and we are stepping up.

I would not say "Don't be a dino" - I'd rather say don't be a donkey. Is that not their mascot though, the incarnation of their spirit ... a donkey?

Mr. Dubya was the perfect candidate for the Donkey-in-Chief position - when he didn't win the election, the vote had to be fixed-up, just so he can make it in the oval office as the leader of all Donkeys - that's how good he was! (I still can't believe that Bush the Second even made the Republican nomination never mind his eight years in office ... then, I remember who his daddy is and his grand-daddy for that matter - the famous American who did business with the Nazis during WWII).

I am no fan of Mr. Obama either though. What happened to closing Guantanamo Bay? What has he done for Native Americans? And it looks like he loving those unmanned drones a little too much. He's making it rain bombs in northern Pakistan: kids are dying ...

Have you watched the Obama Deception? This is no conservative movie ... this documentary is quite straight to the point. It is very good; puts things into a better perspective than your regular corporate media outlets. here it is if you haven;t seen this it is really a must:
