Earth to Progressives: Grow Some Stones Will You?

Updated on May 20, 2011

After every outrage that has been brought about by the GOP and the political right over the last 2 years, where are we? We have let the rightwing propaganda machine define the issues and sat idly by. We have through our apathy put the President in an untenable position to have to negotiate with Agent Orange and Scarecrow (Boehner and McConnell). We should have been enthusiastically supporting the President and the progressives during the midterms last fall. I can understand the resistance of the Fred Flintstone and Ralph Kramden types, but as progressives, we should know better.

Our adversaries are counting on our being distracted and letting them distort the facts to the point to what was once crystal clear has been convoluted with rightwing nonsense. We have clearly, as a nation, made a decision to elect Barack Obama president. If you were opposed to this and were willing to have misgivings about the change that we needed at the time, why didn’t you just vote for McCain?

This rightwing propaganda machine is of immense power and reach and can easily deceive the feeble minded into advocating positions clearly not in their best interests but in the interests of other unscrupulous people and entities. Our relative civility as progressives should not be confused as weakness. We must not be deceived; one should never bring a knife to a gunfight.

The adversary is dismantling the foundation of the entire middle class. Do we fiddle while Rome burns? If we do not have the courage of our convictions then we are the weak sniveling nerds they say we are. What else do you need to know? We have watched them attempt to unravel public employee unions in a grasp for raw power over its adversary. We knew from the beginning of President Obama’s term that they have been obstructionist to a man within Congress. We watch them complain about Obama’s health care program while Mr. Blow Dry (Romney) did the same thing in Massachussetts and something similar was embraced by rank and file GOP during the 1990’s. Check out Gingrich’s flip-flop. We see once they get into power that they move the focus from jobs to their ideological agenda. We see that they are not interested in the deficit as they want to continue endless subsidies to corporate America at the expense of all of the rest of us. Paul Ryan has no problem gutting Medicare for seniors as long as we save Thurston Howell and his scurvy crew. Should they not have skin in the game? So when a rightwinger throws out blatant insults and accusations are we going to go hide behind mama’s skirts.? They must be made to support their incendiary, bomb throwing statements at every turn. When you confront most of them, they will run like rabbits as they rarely have anything substantive to support their statements. Be aware of that and stand firm. So, don’t be a DINO, you are either part of the problem or part of the solution. Like Bill Mahr said a few weeks ago, the choice is between a friend that disappoints and an intractable enemy. So, what is your choice?
