How Deep Is Your Love? (We & Our Country)

Updated on December 30, 2009

How deep is your love
I really need to learn
‘Cause we’re living in a world of fools
Breaking us down
When they all should let us be
We belong to you and me
(How Deep is Your Love – Bee Gees)

What's on your mind, when you asked “ How deep in your love for your country?”

Have you ever heard that the nationalism between younger generation not as deep as the previous generation. As we know that right now is modern era. They are not holding a gun to defend the country from attack another nation. like my country attacked by the Dutch and Japanese. or when the America attacked by the British. Maybe the previous generation had a responsibility to follow the military compulsory. This is required if at any time other nations attacked the country. Patriotism and nationalism are the same side, both are needed to better love our country.

How to measure it

Actually measure of our love for the country is similar to the measure of our love for our spouse. There is a simple quotes : "If you don't know, you also wouldn't love". How can we claim to love the country if we do not know our own country. At least we accept a variety of differences, such as ethnicity, language, religion, etc. Instead, measure the love of the country can't judge from the outside. Like always put the flag ahead of independence celebrations. But this is small action to show that we love our country. in other words measuring love of the country have a bigger relativity.

Don't forget the history

All things there always be the history behind it. Independence of a nation there must be a struggle to achieve it. We know that from the history. We can read, looking for the information, and perhaps there was living proof who involve in battle or as a witness. This can increased the feeling of love for our country, And adding a sense of ownership for our country. dig up information is also important to follow those who give big contribution to the state. and we can imitate him.The real heroes are always humble.

I always teach to my student about nationalism. They have to know who is the first president. We can find the first president in the history lesson. Actually the kid want to know much about it, it proven that they ask me much than I expected.

Accepting differences

When we love our spouse, we have to accept her differences. In the nation life we were surrounded by differences. Racism sometimes becomes a problem. Such as a white people, black people. There are minority and majority in our society. Why we don't unite and eliminate all differences into a peaceful nation. Together we support our country. Action required than talking.

Start from small things

Maybe we don't know the history of our country. But we are not aware our tears fall when listening to national anthem. There is a simple thing we can do to raise our nationalism. like:

  • Grow large tolerance, which requires the maturity to think and act.
  • Doing the small things, such as keeping the environment clean, taking out the trash in its place.
  • Don't easily to believe the issues related to race, discrimination, religion and between social classes, before checking the truth.

Do we ready when our country attack by the enemies? When it really happen, do we ready to defend our country? at this moment our nationalism or patriotism being tested. It back to us. I hope we can open our eyes about the sense of nationalism and sense of patriotism.

That's a sign of allegiance to one's country that I first read here at hubs. Your country must be very proud of someone like you. Keep the going on, no matter how rough it is.

Thanks for Jim Brian, Hello, Petra Vlah and Pete Maida for coming to this hub and give wonderful opinion. I think we have the same thought here. The nationalism wouldn't come if we wait our country attacked by the enemies. The nationalism come from our heart. There is a take and give by the people and the government, like Pete said. A little thing ca be practiced like knowing history, geography, culture and like Jim said, knowing the name of people who have important role in the country. But it need a knowledge. We all can learn about it. We can use the internet to search all we need to know about our country. Simple thing that we can do.

Thanks for all who support this hub. I really appreciate all the opinion.

You are coorect all the way around. People should fear a responsibility to their country and the government should respect those people and not put them in harms way unless it is absolutley necessary.

Your statement about American children, while accurate is not half as frightening as it would be if you tried to get adults to name 10 people who participated in either Continental Congress, 10 people who signed the Declaration of Independence, or who 10 of their own State's officials are.

The love of your country begins with knowing about its history, geography, culture and the rest.

Most American children have little or no idea about the geogrphy and can't name two majore rivers, five states and more than one mountain.

How can you love something you don't know? National pride IS NOT an abstract concept; it is based on knowledge and understanding

Thanks Kuboje for wonderful comment. You peel this topic more interesting. I think you also good citizens. You have great thought about nationalism. Younger generation have to know the history of the country. I think teenager was difficult to accept. Because they are accustomed with modern life and technology affect their mindset. But little different with young children, they have big curious.

Hello Prasetio30, completely agree with you. In the olden days of war time, patriotism can easily be measured.

We can identify those who really love their country are the ones who are ready to sacrifice anything even their own life.

Nowadays one of the best ways to develop a patriotism is to teach younger children to get more familiar with their own country historically and in general.

In the end, when more people love the same thing such as their country, the more unity they can get. Ultimately you get yourself a solid foundation for a country that can demolish any obstacles to soar and move forward, become a stronger nation in the long term.

I respect you as a teacher more importantly teaching those young children to pride with their country, no matter what.

      Good Job
