I'm Sorry! I Was Born White
People told me I was privileged
My name is John and I was born white. People told me I was privileged.
when I started school, at 6, about 30% of students were black. People told me I was from the privileged white group.
At the end of the school year there was a party. The best student of each class would have the privilege to be the speaker and talk to an audience of parents and friends. I was the best student of my class, but I could not be the speaker. The speaker was Peter, the 3rd best student. He was black. I complained. They told me I was privileged because I was white, and we had to show the diversity of our school, Peter was the face of that diversity
People told me I was privileged.
Still, people told me I was privileged
When I was fifteen I was elected president of the students association, but the Principal ignored the results of the election on the grounds that "the candidates elected were too white", and "did not reflect how diverse the school was". We were forced to create some new positions to ensure minorities were "fairly" represented. Lana, a black girl, was the president that year.
Still, people told me I was privileged.
But, you know, they say I am privileged.
I applied to university, and I had good grades. Unfortunately, because I was a man, and because I was white, and women and racial quotas had to be met, I wasn't admitted. The last five people admitted had worst grades, but they were women and/or black.
But, you know, they say I am privileged.
