Mendacity? What's That!

Updated on April 14, 2011

It's All Smoke And Mirrors!

Are you saying it's all a lie? As I cruising the headlines I ran across the word mendacity which is the polite way of saying someone is lying. It's meaning in the dictionary is 1) the quality of being mendacious; untruthfulness; tendency to lie and 2) an instance of lying; falsehood. It is synonymous with deception, lie, untruth and deceit. For our purposes, we will use the word to describe the shenanigans occurring in Foggy Bottom. They wouldn't lie or try to deceive the American public now, would they?

This has to do with the supposedly bipartisan agreement that kept the government up and operating the past few days. According to all accounts, the CBO in particular, this was the typical political smoke and mirrors gig. It consisted of accounting gimmicks mainly and turned what appears to be a $38,5 billion dollar reduction to a measly $14 billion reduction. These guys better get a new smoke machine and a shipment of mirrors because the CBO is crunching their numbers.

According to the CBO, federal outlays actually rise by $177 billion. Yes, I did say rise, not fall. The report went on further to say that any reduction in the federal deficit at all will be $352 million. That wasn't a typing error, that was a "m," not a "b." Which keeps the 1.6 trillion to be added to our national debt for this fiscal year.

The short and sweet of it, my fellow Americans, is that we have had the wool pulled over our eyes one more time. Any politician, whether Republican or Democrat, who votes for this sort of shenanigans needs to be booted out of office and run out of Foggy Bottom on a rail when they face the electorate again.

I know that they know what the CBO said about all of this. If they know that and vote for it they need to be held accountable - at the polls.

I say, "NO DEAL!" If the government has to shut down - SHUT ER DOWN! I'm tired of being lied to over and over again by these professional pick pockets.

As Always,

The Frog

I'm glad you brought this up because this is just another example of the elite in Washington leading the rest of us around on a leash. I agree, shut it down, because this bi-partisan agreement is a lie!

FP - This makes me feel like the victim of a huge con game, which it was. Like most con victims say, "I can't believe I fell for that."

I would say unbelievable, but it's not. It's sad when you cease to be surprised at the low-down dirty doings of our leaders. For those who said the 38 billion was a drop in the bucket...I wonder what they're calling the 352 million?

Not understanding what someone is saying doesn't mean they are lying. Budget Authority is different from outlays and they do not line up exactly. There is no deception here, only ignorance on how the actual process works. And it isn't like the $38 billion was expected to make much of a dent anyway.

The CBO has made no such report. The information was made up by some reporter and has been rippling through the various horses' mouths. Jamie Dupree was discussing this today on the Boortz radio show. He's pretty pissed at the outright constructions of some of his fellow "journalists". In any case, rest assured it's business as usual in the castle. And all the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put America back together again. Note to O-man: It ain't America without Americans and if you keep looking down yer nose at me all yer gonna see is ASS!

      I feel better now.

They said they cut $38 billion from budget authority(BA). They did. The CBO agrees. They did not say they were cutting $38 billion from outlays (actual spending). They didn't pull wool over anyone's eyes. The wool was already there because people don't understand the difference between BA and outlays.

The savings this FY year amount to $352 million. The y used every accounting gimmick they could pull out of their useless brains. That's called pulling the wool in most people's book.

      junkseller,

"They did not say they were cutting $38 billion from outlays" - That's exactly the problem. Even were Congress to only cut $38 billion from the budget, it would be a drop in the bucket, and apparently they didn't even do that; only $352 million was actually promised, and without a balanced budget law, there's nothing to stop them from adding in new spending. It's all just smoke and mirrors. We need a law requiring SURPLUSES so we can pay off the debt. That means spending reductions and tax increases in the TRILLIONS on an annual basis for decades. Federal spending will need to be cut almost 50%, and taxes will need to go up almost 50%, and we will need to maintain this discipline for at least 30 years.

Stu - Now I have to admit that this adminstration has one of the best smoke and mirrors acts going. Here's what I am putting forth for today's reading. This guy needs to be impeached!
