Some Things Take Time
With over fifty campaign promises kept President Obama continues to try to get all of them met. Of course, this is not entirely up to him. As president he cannot make law; he can only enforce it. But President Obama continues to pressure congress to work toward his stated goals.
A Long List Indeed.
Unlike the President Obama Successes hub, I will only list the titles of the promises that are still in the works. After all there are one hundred thirty three of them.
Increase the capital gains and dividends taxes for higher-income taxpayers
Eliminate all oil and gas tax loopholes
Extend child tax credits and marriage-penalty fixes
Require economic justification for tax changes
Make permanent the Research & Development tax credit
Require automatic enrollment in 401(k) plans
Require automatic enrollment in IRA plans
Create a retirement savings tax credit for low incomes
Change standards for determining broadband access
Create a consumer-friendly credit card rating system
Create a $60 billion bank to fund roads and bridges
Extend the Bush tax cuts for lower incomes
Repeal the Bush tax cuts for higher incomes
Phase out exemptions and deductions for higher earners
Freeze the 2009 estate tax law
Tax carried interest as ordinary income
Sign the Employee Free Choice Act, making it easier for workers to unionize
Provide easy-to-understand comparisons of the Medicare prescription drug plans
Require large employers to contribute to a national health plan
Require children to have health insurance coverage
Expand eligibility for Medicaid
Invest in electronic health information systems
Phase in requirements for health information technology
Establish an independent health institute to provide accurate and objective information
Prevent drug companies from blocking generic drugs
Work with schools to create more healthful environments for children
Improve recruitment of public health workers
Double federal funding for cancer research
Fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
Reduce the threshold for the Family and Medical Leave Act from companies with 50 employees to companies with 25 employees
Provide a $1.5 billion fund to help states launch programs for paid family and medical leave
Require employers to provide seven paid sick days per year
Expand Veterans Centers in rural areas
Fully fund the Veterans Administration
Expand the Veterans Administration's number of "centers of excellence" in specialty care
Reduce the Veterans Benefits Administration claims backlog
Institute electronic record-keeping for the Veterans Benefits Administration
Launch a supportive services-housing program for veterans to prevent homelessness
Expand the Family Medical Leave Act to include leave for domestic violence or sexual assault
Begin removing combat brigades from Iraq
Launch robust diplomatic effort with Iraq and its neighbors
Increase the size of the Army and Marine Corps
End the "Stop-Loss" program of forcing troops to stay in service beyond their expected commitments
Review weapons programs
Set standards for when the government should hire defense contractors
End the abuse of supplemental budgets for war
Work to end NATO restrictions on forces in Afghanistan
Train and equip the Afghan army
Double U.S. spending on foreign aid to $50 Billion a year by 2012
Establish a Global Education Fund
