Our Way or the Highway

Updated on May 23, 2016

Tevya Wants to Opine

Good morning, Breakfastpoppers. Today is Monday, May 23, 2016. Our delightful friend, Wasp Tevya, is at the breakfast table this morning. Tevya has prepared an elaborate spread of bagels, lox and cream cheese for our enjoyment. I will supply all the Irish coffees necessary to turn a lively discussion into an even livelier talk. It seems that America is growing less receptive to differences of opinion. From the local school board to the Oval Office, Americans are being directed and tutored to speak and think in a very narrow way. Differences of opinion are no longer welcome. Please join us at the table this morning to talk about certain "changes" taking place in our country that are very un-American. We hope to see you soon.

Thank you all for coming to the breakfast table this morning. Let me get right to the heart of the matter. The Portland Public Schools Board of Portland, Oregon has passed a resolution to remove from every classroom any and all materials that would dare to cast doubt on whether or not climate change is actually happening. The vote was unanimous. Not one person on the board gave any thought to the pre enormous amount of evidence on the other side of the issue. In effect, Portland is preparing to scrub the classrooms clean of any textbooks or other materials that do not present climate change as absolute fact. Climate change according to this group of non-scientists, is real and it is caused by human beings. The resolution also demands that the curriculums in the schools address climate justice, as well. If anyone in Portland objects to the silencing of free speech they are being very quiet about it.

Freezing Free Speech

The resolution passed by the Portland Board is indicative of what is going on all over our nation. It isn't just about climate change. It is about everything exclusively American. Our history is under attack. Our speech is being micromanaged in ways that are insane. Portland won't allow its students to read and study the work of prominent scientists who aren't completely sold on the notion of global warming. A new study challenges the results of previous studies by finding that the ice in the Antarctic is actually growing. Access to this type of information will be denied to students. This denial is all about brainwashing and not at all about education. True education allows for differences of opinion. Anyone truly concerned with climate change should be willing to review and explore all the available data. Instead, climate change champions wish to silence dissent and punish the dissenters.

Freedom is Dying

The Portland resolution is just the tip of the iceberg, no pun intended. Freedom is declining in our nation. The Fraser Institute released its annual report, "The Human Freedom Index" and found that our nation has fallen from 17th place to 20th place when it comes to personal, civil and economic freedom. If you thought that America leads the world as the land of the free and the home of the brave, you were wrong. Our decline is in direct proportion to the expansion of government. These findings are appalling. The Heritage Foundation's "2015 Index of Economic Freedom" showed the decline of the U.S. from 2nd place in 2000 to 12th place. This drop coincides with government's increasingly intrusive role in all of our lives.

Into the Fire

The reasons for our decline are overwhelming. Obamacare put a nail in the coffin by limiting competition and being largely unaffordable. Our government spends our money with abandon on projects none of us would approve of if we were asked. The State Department squandered our money by authorizing a $500 million dollar payment to the United Nations climate change program. They did so without first obtaining congressional approval. The rule of law is dead in America. Our system of checks and balances is dead. Congress is dead. The Constitution is dead. If we don't wake up soon, we won't be able to live here.

Tevya's Song

Dear God, you made so many leftists

It's a shame to be a leftist

And it's no great honor either!

      Good Morning Peggy,

There was a time when we valued free speech and practiced it. Things have changed in this country, and we are all suffering because of it. Government is overblown and wasteful and our nation is no longer a nation of laws. All we can do is vote wisely and try to turn things around. Thanks so much for coming to the breakfast table.

Government is definitely too large and unwieldy and spending our money in places and ways of which we would not agree. Personally I think that all sides of a concern should be freely shared. Suppressing one side of an argument hardly makes sense. This is in response to what is being done in the Portland schools.

      Dear have maven,

My computer has a distinct mind of its own. I can't write to broadcaster using his name, because my computer calls him broadcaster! See what I mean, I tried to write his name, but it changed it!!! I'll save a seat for you at the Inn.

      Good Morning have,

      The earth is hot

      The earth is cold

      I suggest it is both

If I may be so bold!

See you later at the Inn. Your Strawberry Daiquiri awaits your arrival, as do I....

They deny moral absolutes, while treating their own moral postulates as self-evident and unchallengeable moral absolutes.

Listen, my friend, to this ancient tale of old,

A tall, tall tale of global warming and global cold...

The Earth will be frozen, screamed Stanford's chosen,

      By the year 2000...

Climate refugees will flee, in fear of the rising sea,

Said the U.N. in the year 2000...

And now we hear, the end is near,

Global warming's tipping point is here...

Dr. Gore assures us all, in 2015 we take the fall,

      Damocles Sword hovers above...

Buy your carbon credits while you can, spend them wisely and feed the scam,

Because you, my friend, can save the world with Love...

Pop, See you at the unsubmerged Inn...make mine a double Strawberry Daiquiri...

      Dear fp,

I guess we have come full circle. Now it is considered okay to burn books and punish people for daring to think independently. If this trend continues, people like you and I could face prosecution. I hope we are in the same cell! See you at the Inn.

This is government banning books. This is government limiting speech. This is clearly unconstitutional.

Of course. Let's just keep going further & further up the yellow brick road like the brainless scarecrow, heartless tinman and gutless lion.....why be afforded the access to all knowledge, all sides to an issue, the findings of experts, scholars & scientists, in order to use our intelligence, common sense and independent thought process and have a sound, rational opinion?? Let's just be force-fed the information of a portion of the government that chooses for us what to learn, what to believe. Let's be happy with the easy, lazy way to ingest vital information about the world in which we all live and expect to survive in. No need for us to have access to necessary education, rational results from long term, tireless research & study. And to think book-burning at one time was considered an egregiously ignorant action used by evil dictators in an effort to CONTROL......

      Good Morning billy,

Many citizens have turned into people who find freedom frightening, like the prisoner who prefers prison. If things don't change, we are in for a bleak future. See you at the Inn. By the way, I am no longer receiving a list of people who published. Is the same true of you?

      Good Morning brad,

We are definitely already on that road you speak of. This next generation will be clueless when comes to our history. They will also only know the government's proscribed and allowed point of view, if we don't stop things now before it's too late. I find it hard to believe anything these days. Manipulation of and by the press has turned most of into dummies. What's happening now is very frightening. By the way, salt is now good for us! See you at the Inn.

      Good Mrning Mike,

It's all so sad. I discussed this hub with two of my grandchildren, twelve and seven, and they were appalled. They both believe that the earth is warming, but they are smart enough to know that eliminating other opinions is dead wrong. Many people today don't seem to mind having other people (the left) think for them. It saves time and they don't have to expend energy trying to think on their own. It's like the prisoner who doesn't want to be paroled. See you at the Inn.

It made no difference to me the examples you used....the premise you started with is true, whether you are conservative or a flaming liberal like yours truly....personal freedoms are being stripped from us at an alarming rate, and the American public goes on with the daily business of living, blithely unaware that they are being controlled and are losing their liberties.

The US gov has not been right about so many things because they listen to the left. They have been wrong about the basic food groups for over the last 50 yrs. They have been wrong about eggs, and heart disease. They have been wrong about fat causing people to get fat. The list goes on and on.

The gov was wrong about the Muslim Terrorists and not learning from the attack on Pearl Harbor, and that resulted in a clean victory for the terrorists. Now, how are we supposed to believe anything that the government says today?

The left has killed the Freedom of Speech. When the government federal, state, or local censors anything there goes the 1st Amendment.

It is like the church and Copernicus, except they killed when Copernicus spoke the truth.

Carbon trading makes a mockery of even trying to deal with carbon.

It is no wonder why every new generation seems to be less smarter than the previous generation. It must be the education system directing how students must think and see things around them.

Russia, China, and Nazi Germany all rewrote history and now the US is starting down that road.

      Good morning Pop and Tevya,

The really sad thing is your great hub only touched on one of many demonstrations of insanity that are so prevalent these days. I really wonder what has happened to this world we live in.

Why are there so many who are willing to give away the freedoms so many fought and died for? Why do we constantly strive to revise history to make it look different than the truth?

I am glad I will most likely not be around in 20 years or so to see the effects of all these insane decisions being made today.

Another "stinging" article. Liberals are not liberal and progressives have made no progress.

      Good Morning Jennifer,

I always love it when you come to the table. Before we know it all references to WWII will be scrubbed from our history, along with anything else the left finds offensive. We really aren't free anymore. See you at the Inn. Drinks are on me.
