The Effects of Fasting

Updated on February 11, 2013

Fast onto a Change!

Such terms have been read so many times from those people who want to bring about a positive change in our society. Why, fast? Why not use other technique?

Answer is:- Violence is everywhere and being violent cannot bring about a change...PERIOD!

All sensible people have realized non-violence is the path of attaining one's goal. Thus, such people torture themselves in order to bring about a change in the society. Many leaders have fasted to bring about a revolution. Some examples that I can think of are:-

  • Mahatma Gandhi--Is the legend of Non-violence. He firmly believed in non-violence and that made the Britishers give up on India..eventually. He fasted for peace when India was partitioned. There were communal riots and there was no way to control people who got independence from Britishers and now were made to make a difficult decision of deciding whether to live in India or Pakistan. Gandhi fasted until there was peace amongst the people.
  • Potti Sriramulu: He fasted in Madras city of India for ~82 days asking for a state for the city he was fasting in. Ultimately, the Government granted a state, Andhra for the city of Madras.
  • Jatin Das: He starved himself to death in 62 days demanding equality for Indian prisoners in other countries. The conditions of Indian inhabitants of the jails was deplorable- the jail uniforms the Indian jail mates wore was not washed and the kitchen area and food was covered with rats and cockraches.
  • Irom Sharmila Chanu:-She is also known as the "Iron Lady of Manipur". She is a civil rights activist, political activist, and poet from the Indian state of Manipur. Since November 2000, she has been fasting to bring about the government to notice the attrocities brought about on the civilians of the city. Having refused food and water for more than ten years, she has been called "the world's longest hunger striker".
  • Anna Hazare:-Is currently fasting for a BILL to pass. This bill is against corruption. And IF this bill will be passed by the Parliament then, our future generation will know what a clean world it can be without money being used for any deeds to be performed.

Such people have determination to bring about a change in their society. They are not in need of gaining importance but in need of a revolution; a change which will help the whole society. Their self-less act of giving up on food is remarkable and I salute these human beings who prefer to be the leaders of a present situation rather than being a leader of a country and gaining all the fame and luxuries which come with it.

yeah Anna hazare on the way the way of mahatma gandhi, but at gandhi time situation is much more different from now .

that time we were under englishmen ruling power now we have all kind's of facility ,we have good voting system but the main thing is that corruption.

how we can remove corruption from india because we are used too.

there are so many examples from narrow way to Highway all are corrupt .

that's the main point Anna is less effective then Gandhi......

hope we can make difference ......

Yes, Rasta that sure was some serious fasting :) Thanks for your input.

Yes, Linda. Fasting is tough...I dunno if I could do it either :) cheers!

Yes, Rajan. Gandhiji sure was an icon and we all ought to learn something from him. I sure do hope and pray Anna Hazare can bring about some revolution in today's world. Jai Ho!

Hi Cyndi. Yes, Gandhi was one dedicated soul and I am glad you realize his remarkable life and his contributions. India got it's independence thanks to him and many other souls that martyred themselves. Thanks for your support and comment. A pleasure to hear from you...cheers!

Ruchira, Gandhiji is the prime example of how powerful non violence and fasting is if used properly. Anna Hazare in recent times is another. Your hub topic choice is commendable and I like the way you expand on a wee bit of an idea and turn it into a wonderful hub with a message.

      Voted up and interesting.

What I find interesting is how these people are fasting in an attempt to bring about a change in their society. And yet here we are in this country selfishly stuffijng ourselves in to oblivian. We should take a lesson from them.

Excellent hub. Voting up, interesting & awesome

Thank you Kawaljit Kaur for your kind words.

Since Anna Hazare went on a hunger strike all the above ideas came to me which prompted me to research a few other people who have sacrificed themselves for the sake of a goal which is benefited to all.

It is not easy to starve oneself for the sake of the public interest esp when you don't get a big chunk of salary and Private jets to travel on ;)

So true Makusrjee. Unfortunately life is becoming priceless but, if public awareness is created and people unite on a stand...hunger strike or any strike can create a revolution.

Thank you for your priceless comment was much appreciated.

Fasting they say purifies soul. The govt. is so insensitive that they need someone who matters to tell them that they are so aggrieved that they are ready to die if it doesn't listen. In Anna's case the millions behind him and this humble writer is also one, opened the eyes of the govt. that what it called a non-issue was a burning issue. Thanks for bringing the unsung heroes in the limelight.

      Lots of Love,

@always exploring...I realized the advantage of fasting and being able to create a change by a recent news in India and that invoked me to do a little bit of research behind it and found this theory very enchanting indeed.

Fasting to bring about a change...such a noble idea to create a change for our society.

Thanks for stopping by. Here, in the US we should try to follow what your Grandmother also believed in since; we need quite a few change in our reforms ;-)

I only knew about Gandhi, i've always admired him very much. I have great respect for the others. My Grandmother, Minnie believed in fasting. We as a country should fast here in America, so much turmoil. Thank you for sharing these people with us....
