Stupid Things Mitt Romney Has Said

Updated on February 20, 2014

Another Disclosure

For those of you who haven't seen my Hub on the stupid things that Rick Santorum has said, I feel that it is my duty to disclose my political leanings prior to making any negative statements about things that politicians have said.

I am independent, but I generally lean towards liberal. I am very liberal when it comes to social issues, but more moderate in regards to fiscal policy.

That being said, below is a list of the stupid (and sometimes scary) things that Mitt Romney has said during the course of his political career (and by political career I mean all the time he has spend running for president)

Stupid Things Mitt Says

"It's not the language I would have used" - This doesn't sound stupid at first glance...but let us look at the context here. When asked by reporters what he thought about Rush Limbaugh's offensive comments about the college student who spoke on Capital Hill about birth control, this is all he said. He did not say that Rush shouldn't have called her a slut, or even that Rush is just an overbearing entertainer. No, all he said was that he wouldn't have used the same language. Rush was right, but maybe he was too mean about it.

"I'm not concerned about the very poor, there is a safety net there" - Yes, I'm sure the very poor are thankful for their gang-ridden section 8 housing and the horrible schools in their neighborhoods. That little safety net is doing a lot to keep the streets safer for their children, to get healthy foods into those neighborhoods, and to ensure that the poor stay poor. In addition, he says he isn't worried about it, but most Republicans want to cut these safety net programs, blaming them for all of the nation's budget problems when only about 2% of the total budget goes to these programs.

"I like being able to fire people" - Really? Who is this heartless? Firing people is awful. Obviously it has to be done, being fired is part of life, and always a risk when working for someone else. But who really enjoys it? Even if your employee isn't performing correctly, you know that you are hurting him and his family by firing him. Who gets off on that?

"I have some friends who are NASCAR team owners" - Really? He was trying to express that he was in touch with the Southerners who are huge fans of NASCAR. How many Southern Nascar fans have friends who are team owners? Epic Fail. Once again Romney proves the opposite.

"Planned Parenthood, we're going to get rid of that" - Yes, he was talking about balancing the budget, and this is something we desperately need. But nonchalantly casting aside an organization that helps millions of women is unacceptable. Contrary to popular belief, planned parenthood is not just an abortion clinic. It provides pre-natal care to women who wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise. Many Planned Parenthood locations offer classes to young parents. It provides STD tests and breast cancer screenings. Overall, it is a complete woman's health center for those that can't afford to go anyplace else. Millions of people use Planned Parenthood, but I guess if you have the amount of money Mitt Romney's family has, you don't have to worry about it.

"Ann Drives a couple of Cadillacs" - A couple of Cadillacs? Do I even need to say any more about this?

"The answer is self-deportation, which is people decide they can do better by going home" - Mitt Romney is living in a fantasy world with this one. There is a chance that a small small percentage of illegal immigrants will "self deport". It is highly doubtful that any significant number will. This is a horrible plan. It will never work. It will never happen. He needs to face the issue and come up with a fair and equitable compromise rather than making up fairy tale plans that will never work. That is not very presidential.

"I'll bet you $10,000" - If he had said a million dollars, people would probably have realized that it was a facetious bet (as he claimed). But a multi-millionaire betting 10 grand is similar to the average person betting 100 bucks. He can claim he wasn't serous all he wants, but this was chump change to him, and the general consensus is - he was serious.

And last...Everyone's favorite:

"Corporations are People" - This is the scariest one. The SCOTUS even agreed with him on this. This mindset is helping to destroy America

Mitt Romney is Funny, Scary, and out of Touch

Mitt Romney is not a scary man. Most of these stupid things that he says are based more on his own stupidity than on his core convictions (does he even have any of those?). Most people say stupid things that they don't mean, but most of them aren't running for president. Also, it does seem that Mr. Romney says something stupid more often than not whenever he opens his mouth.

A few of the quotes are scary though. Corporations are People. It's not the language I would have used. These things show his heart. They show how he really feels. I don't want a president who thinks a corporation should have the same rights as a living breathing person. I don't want a president who thinks I'm a slut because I have used birth control pills.

Mitt Romney is out of touch with most Americans. He can't even begin to fathom the hardships of people living on minimum wage, or even of people making less than $100,000 per year. He has never experienced it. This doesn't make him a bad person, but it might make him a bad president.

Yet again, you made me laugh all the way through this hub! lmao It's so funny because you are so right! It's better to remain thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Santorum and Romney should really heed this warning!

Do you think that the current Congress and President Obama have DONE anything better than the candidates?

The problems of the US goes much deeper than just the Presidency. So I see no point in making fun of the presidential candidates. The sad fact is that if Obama is retained as president, the country will have four more years like the over three years that we have so far under his presidency.

The real problem is that the US Government is obese, ineffective, and or incompetent. As we had just before the 2008 Presidential Election, the economy is just a little above collapse. Trillions of dollars have been thrown at the economic problem and still today people are out of work, they are still losing their homes, and the price of fuel continues to rise. On the other hand, we have more and more mergers and acquisitions as the private sector businesses collapse. The result are super global conglomerates that are monopolies that have no real competition.

This is bad for the US Consumer, and bad for all those people that lost their job, and even their company.

Unfortunately, hubs like this are more related to Nero fiddling while the fires raged, then any possible constructive value.

A parody makes people laugh, unless they live in the real world and experience the problems first hand.

Daughter of Maat - Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.

IB Radmasters - Yes, I do think President Obama is better than most of the candidates. However, I do agree with you that the government is ineffective, and most likely it will continue to be regardless of who is elected. The only candidate who I don't think has the same "masters" as everyone else is Ron Paul, but we know he won't be elected.

In the meantime, you have to have a sense of humor about things.

Really? Why do you libs spend so much time trying to feel superior to conservatives? Liberals believe themselves to be so sharp and witty but ignore their own?

Biden says something so dumb and so naïve every time he gets a microphone! Obama doesn't even know how many states are in the union! Pelosi has got to be one of the top queen air heads this country has ever seen!..........we got to pass the bill to see what's in it! Why not talk abou issues?

Besides if you want dumb quotes why not refer to your hub! Your liberal on social issues but conservative on fiscal ones? To be conservative on fiscal issues you must be willing to cut out the social services this country is bleeding right now!.........can't have them both!

American Romance - Don't worry, I am equal opportunity. When the general election campaign gets into full swing, I am sure that I will be writing a hub on the stupid things President Obama says.

By social issues I mean equal rights for everyone. I am for gay marriage. I am pro-choice. I am for woman's rights. I am for equal opportunity in employment. I am against going to war without a very very good reason.

When I say I am a fiscal conservative, I mean I am against life-time welfare. I am against more money for more babies. I am against long term unemployment. I don't think people should get a "tax refund" when they didn't pay anything in federal taxes. I don't think people should get a "tax refund" or welfare because they were irresponsible and had 6 kids they can't afford.

I hope this clarifies what I mean.

Great hub! But as you know, ALL people in the public eye say stupid things at one time or another. However, you are spot on with the majority of your political views. If people want to know what Obama has done, they need to do some homework...let's see: Ended a war, kept the country from falling into a major depression, introduced a health care program that will help millions of people, set up and funded a Medicare/Medicaid Fraud Unit that has saved billions of dollars...shall I go on? Great hub!!

Thanks iscribble...I thought about adding the dog thing, but it was such a long time ago and doesn't really have anything to do with politics I decided against it. It was kind of funny though. I'm glad you liked it, the Rick Santorum one isn't as funny.

Thanks TimeTraveler. I'm glad you liked it. I know that everyone in the public eye says stupid things every now and then, that's why I will probably being writing hubs on the stupid things President Obama says and the stupid things Joe Biden says. I do lean more towards the democratic side, so those hubs will probably just be funny (hopefully) but at least I'm honest about my bias! I agree that President Obama has been a pretty good president, I would like to see him have 4 more years. I think he will do much better than Romney

Being liberal on social issues is the stupidest thing that I have heard of when said by anyone.

Politicians cannot solve social issues, especially when they can't even solve fiscal issues, and all that requires is being good at math.

    • Elani-Lee profile image

Elani-Lee 5 years ago from Los Angeles

IB Radmasters, I agree that politicians can't "solve" social issues. But they can stop making laws that limit people's rights. No politician is going to solve the real pressing social issues such as racism, poverty, crime, etc. I clarified my meaning in my response to American Romanance's comment.

Stupid things Obama says........just days ago he stepped out of Camp David and announced to the world he and other leaders had a plan to get 50 Million people out of the poverty world wide!..............No one, Not even FOX questioned this? We have 60 Million on welfare here in the states alone?.........If this plan is so wonderful then why hasn't he implemented it here at home? Just another rhetoric speech with no basis........give me Romney anyday!

"Obama......announced....a plan to get 50 Million people out of the poverty world wide!....We have 60 Million on welfare here in the states alone? If this plan is so wonderful...why hasn't he implemented it here at home?"

American Romantic: Try to get a PLAN to eliminate poverty past the republicans and tea party sociopaths. Don't forget Romney doesn't care about the most needy in America because they have a saftey net. "According to the US Census Bureau, 35.9 million people live below the poverty line in America, including 12.9 million children." How many of these people are living in poverty because politicians (YUP, democraps and republicraps)have allowed corporations to ship their high paying jobs overseas?

Oh, wait. According to people like Sharron Angle, all these people who haven't found jobs after being laid-off are just lazy people who want to live off the government dole....You know, kinda like she does.

The fact is that all politicians say stupid things; it just so happens that the republicans have cornered the market on stupidity....And sociopathy.

I agree, these are really the dumbest quotes Mitt the Twit has ever said. Mitt Romney and all the Republicans should shut their mouths. I am pretty sure Mitt Romney is not the Anti-Christ. He would be smarter and more good looking. As for ib radmasters writing Unfortunately, hubs like this are more related to Nero fiddling while the fires raged, then any possible constructive value. That was not true. Nero, helped to put out the fire, but blamed it on Christians. Mitt Romney is an idiot, but it seems to me like he is trying to "buy" the Presidency.

This is a very good hub.

Elani-Lee it is for certain that the Obama campaign has done its best to stir up the voters for social issues, and they have also done their best to paint Romney as some evil villain... or at the very least a rich out of touch person who cannot relate to average Americans.

It's been a terrible thing to watch, as lies about Romney are repeated endlessly to defame him, and the truths about Obama are covered up or ignored, no matter how many will suffer.

Actions speak louder than words... turn off the noise from the media as best you can, and look at the facts... not what they tell you Obamacare is, but what it really is. Not what they say they are doing to create jobs, but what they have really done...

The choice is yours, to blindly follow, to believe lies without checking facts... or to really inform yourself.

Please take the time to read my Hub -Selling the President to America- take a moment to consider after reading it...

What social interests will we be able to maintain, if America is much worse off four years from now than it is today?

If corporations are people, Then when a corporation breaks a law, then where is the prison that houses that corporation. I have seen plenty of prisons for people, but non for companies.

Ergo, corporations are not people. If they are then they should have some equivalent of being locked up from crimes they did, and the equivalent of a death penalty.

Ken, Thank you for the constructive comment. I see that we disagree on issues, but I like that you can express your disagreement in a positive way without insults. I actually think that both political parties are to blame for the present downfall of America. I would have loved to have voted for Ron Paul. However, given the present choices, I have to go with Obama. I did outline some reasons in my Hub "why vote Obama"

Gregg, if you disagree, could you please tell me what you disagree about? I would love to hear your opinions about it. I don't think that Obama is pushing a completely socialist agenda. I don't see the problem with helping people who are down on their luck, but I do see a problem with helping them forever. I don't agree with all of the dems policies, but I really don't like how the repubs pander to the religious right and the super wealthy. I would be interested to hear exactly what it is that you disagree with and why. We may never reach an agreement, but we may at least gain a better understanding of each other.

The smarter you are the more you realize he is completely right. See I am an actuary, I have studied mathematics, bio statistics, economics, business, and accounting. He is just being honest, and the fact that you make a big deal over a "couple" of Cadillacs just shows how jealous you are. See America is or is supposed to be a capitalist country, where those who are strong and work hard make it big. He has made himself worth over $120 million so his ideas clearly work. Maybe you can all get off your lazy uneducated asses and do the same....then you won't be complaining. But noooooo, you all want the socialist retard whose big idea is the redistribution of wealth. Ask not what you country can do for you, but what you can do for your country~~~JFK, You can't build up the weak by tearing down the strong~~~ Calvin Coolidge

BTW Obama's stats are as is... 7.8% unemployment - 7.8% in 2008, 16.2 trillion national debt - 10.7 trillion 2008, 3.77 ave price of gas - 1.89 in 2008, labor force 155 million - 153 million in 2008. He has devalued our dollar 3 times since he took office. He got rid of over 40K active duty military positions. Now this is vs the one good thing he has done (but didn't really do) which is take down Osama Bin Laden p.s. any president would have done the same thing. He most certainly did not create 4.5 million jobs because if he did our unemployment rate wouldn't be 7.8% still. Gay marriage only effects 3.5% of Americans and doesn't really have an impact on the economy. If his ObamaCare went through the first time he would have caused twice as many businesses to out source and would have made being a doctor a moronic profession. As of right now forcing insurance companies to keep kids until they are 26 without charging extra puts a damper on HMO's and PPO's which employ a lot of people. And the funniest thing is he blames Bush for every bad thing that has happened after Bushes presidency.

Romney wants a flat tax, wants to get rid of ObamaCare which costs trillions and sends the wrong message. He wants to start offshore drilling to lower gas prices. He wants to drop everyone's taxes down to 20% and then introduce a cap/limit to deductions which only reduces our tax income by a couple billion, given that he cuts ObamaCare, this will balance. See Romney's ideas may not be comforting to the lazy ass people who live off of welfare, food stamps, and free healthcare but it is very fair. No one should be be paying for anyone else. We need to learn responsibility. Once this happens the rate of increasing national debt will slow down. Now the most important thing is gas prices. As we have all seen when gas prices change the price of every else changes and we can't just stop using oil/coil/gas. This whole going green is a dream and a dumb one. We need a more simple America that runs smoothly were the governments sole role is to make laws, enforce laws, and protect us from outside attacks. The government should not be covering peoples finances.

Essentially Obama could murder 4 adults, rape 3 kids, take a shit on the white house lawn and you dumb ass liberals and the liberal media would still vote for him.

In Business when a company parades out a "pretty boy" like Romney, they are always referred to as an "empty suit" he is the emptiest of all suits.

As Lee Iacocca once said "step up, lead, or just get out of the way. Romney should take his doll dishes and go home.

Not all Republicans are wrong but independent thinkers still rule.
