The Facts Behind the 2012 Presidential Debate

Updated on October 12, 2012

The American public is hammered with facts, counter-facts, spin on facts, lies, distortions, and half truths in 2012 Presidential election and debates. One side presents it in a manner that is true, but only only partially true; while the other side, does the same. It has so many times already, what is the reality with some issues?

On Libya, regarding the Obama administrations spin, and VP Biden stated that additional security requests had not been received prior to the terrorist attack, is simply false. Call it a lie, call it the truth in that, as far what Biden actually knew then. Yet, what Paul Ryan stated was true. There had been many more security requests that had been turned down or ignored. The issue is why would not a marine detachment be assigned to the embassy as a precaution? The Obama administration has no valid reason. It is hard to admit failure.

As to the often discourse on the General Motors issue, the fact is, it was NOT the Obama administration that saved it. The bailout actually had begun under President Bush and the baton was handed over to Obama in 2008, which continued it. The claim that is was the Democrats that saved GM, is only 50% true.

As to the Obamacare medical board of 15. This is an independent advisory board and part of the overhaul. It does have the power to force cuts in Medicare if costs rise above specified levels. This board's intervention is not expected to do much until 2018 because medicare costs are rising only moderately.

Tax cuts. Obama proposed roll back cuts reach down to a single person earning over $200K\yr. or couples earning $250K.

On Iran, the problem with this issue is nobody REALLY knows, just estimates are known. As of now, most feel Iran has no nuclear material to produce a nuclear bomb, although, it is known that Iran is working on a delivery system for it. Of course, it is changing every month, and maybe by Jan. 2013, they will have enough. As to sanctions, Ryan is correct. The sanctions have 20 exemptions for 20 countries. Countries like China, India, Japan, all continue to buy Iran's oil, which IS there main export and revenue. The sanctions are like swiss cheese, only partially effective and tend to make life hard on the average Iranian, not the rich or government. Sanctions simply are failing at this point.

The democrats assert that they saved $716 billion and applied it to Medicare. Obama is cutting this amount over 10 years in Medicare payments to providers and most of the money is being used to expand health care coverage outside of Medicare.
