The Syrian Hunger Prowl on the Golan

Updated on April 23, 2012

The Syrian rebellion is now over one year old. Despite the efforts of the UN, President Assad continued his dismantling of a nation. Food and medicine are either gone or near gone in many towns and cities. The Syrian government is now selling its gold reserves to fund the war and to replenish supplies.

Yet, much of the war is not on the Golan and adjacent Israeli forces are starting to observe Syrian soldiers hunting for food. Large groups of armed soldiers have gone AWOL to hunt for food. For the first time in years, some have approached the border fence. Israeli soldiers toss over food packets that rapidly disappear. At the Golan town of Quneitra, home to the Syrian 5th Division, 1500 soldiers have walked off. Hundreds of dropouts occur daily from the 15th, 9th and 7th Divisions stationed in central and southern Golan. Large groups of soldiers more concerned about food and water than war especially against their own people. Many of their family members have been killed by the Syrian Army.

Israeli forces observe that many Syrian bases or field positions have been abandoned, leaving the heavy weapons of war in place-and for gangs and others to steal from Jordan and Iraq. These weapons could easily end up in nefarious hands. A Jordanian Sunni terrorist group was responsible for the 100 kilo IED explosion that killed 10 Syrian soldiers in Quneitra. So, there are elements now, other than the freedom fighters, taking shots at Assad's remaining cadre of loyal forces.

Israel could easily enter Syria with little opposition and cause Assad's forces to divert its barrage on civilians near Turkey. This would bring the Assad military to a collapse quicker, instead of the wimpy UN forces now trying to get there. And where is the US?

Our inaction is simply disgraceful. Period.

@mohammed- are you serious? I think only many Arabs think Israel wants to rule from the Nile to Euphrates. That is such an impossibility and you know it. It could never happen today. That is simply fodder for more anti-israel rhetoric, which does help to promote peace. Just silly beliefs.

the story began early, from the days of prophet Muhammad, they tried to kill him. we think that Israel has the right to exist but in peace with its neighbors and not killing them. Israel must stop its dream to rule from Nile to Euphrates rivers.

I understand the history, it all begins in 1948, when the British basically created Israel. What I am saying as someone unbiased is, both sides should get over it! Enough. Israel has the right to exist and it is too late to move out of the area. The Arabs seem to think they don't. Yet, generation after generation carry the "hate" torch on both sides, but more on the Palestinian side. It is just stupid, much like the Irish religious wars of the 70s because one half was catholic and the other, was not.

Islamists do not have to do that, this was a popular demand since it began exporting gas to Israel. And peace existing only between the governments at the official level, but at the grassroots level there is a historic mutual hatred between the Egyptians and Israelis. Among all the Arabs and the Israelis. I do not know if you have a historical background on the subject or not?

Obama is overly cautious on Syria. He could show more support militarily.

Yes, it seems Egypt's decision to cut off gas is sad, but it is contractual, not political, so they say. Why does Egypt want bad relations with Israel after so many years of peace? the radical islamists want it this way?

Israel can't do any thing with Syria nowadays, because it has many enemies today. Iran, Turkey, and the all Arab countries especially Egypt that cut off gas supplies recently. and there is joy of people here in Egypt to this resolution. it can't fight in several fronts.

the Syrian army has only one enemy now, the rebels who will down Assad regime soon.

Assad, the biggest thug, has been accumulating weapons for years and people thought those weapons will be used for national defence or something. Clearly, he is almost depleted using those weapons against his own people which is so sad. And the big problem is that he is threatening the neighbouring coutries by using his arsenal of chemical wareheads!!! This is really tragic and I thank you for writing about this subject. Syrians need as much support as possible and more than what everyone thinks.
