The Trump Administration Shows Signs of Incompetence Amidst Coronavirus Pandemic
Trump's Dangerous Promise
The President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, has announced his plans to reopen America during the COVID-19 Pandemic. He promises to allow American Economy to return to normal and to allow citizens to re-acquire the jobs they had lost. However, these promises are not without risks – incredibly dangerous ones. The Coronavirus, while not having the highest death rate: a measly 1.3%, is still much more dangerous than Influenza. Trump and his team of so-called "experts" does not realize this, and insists on opening the country while downplaying how dangerous COVID-19 can be. Trump supporters adds fuel to the fire, protesting and demanding for the quarantine to be lifted in several states with signs such as "Give Me Liberty, Or Give Me COVID-19" and more ridiculous ones like "We Need a Haircut!". The Trump Administration has done some questionable things that contradicts what we need as well. They have pulled funding in some countries who are researching for a COVID-19 vaccine, and they have fired an expert who was attempting to develop a COVID-19 Vaccine simply because he opposed the drug that Trump suggested.
We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.
— Donald J. TrumpPresident Trump himself is usually the one who hands out the commands to his administration, but some of these orders were not performed, for obvious reasons. For example, Trump suggested to halt funding of the World Health Organization (WHO) due to him suspecting that they have covered up the severity of COVID-19 in collaboration with China. However, that is false, and Trump was met with severe backlash and criticism flooded Trump on social media and during interviews. After that backlash he received, he claims that he will make sure WHO has some funding from the US, but he has not promised anything.
I’m going to put it very simply: The president of the United States has the authority to do what the president has the authority to do, which is very powerful. The president of the United States calls the shots.
— Donald J. TrumpCOVID-19 Testing and Trump's Subpar Response
I'm not here to discredit Trump's efforts, though they are lackluster. Trump has set up COVID-19 Testing sites across America in order to combat the virus. While this is beneficial, it is far from enough. Trump's testing sites are very limited, with a capacity of only about 75,000 nationally. Trump's claim of "Anybody that wants a test can get a test. That’s what the bottom line is." was not fully accurate, as many citizens could not get access to the testing sites due to its limited capacity.
More importantly, Trump's comments on what citizens can do at home to prevent the spread of COVID-19 has been unhelpful at best and harmful at worst. An important example is Trump's comment on disinfectants: "And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning?" Doctors ridiculed Trump and this insane proposal, calling it "absolutely ridiculous".
The Trump administration have made several mistakes throughout Donald Trump's presidency. The most notable of which come before the COVID-19 pandemic, as immigrants revealed to the world how cruel Trump's method of deportation really is, with ICE detentions being compared to concentration camps during WWII. And while Trump's wall is nothing more than a political drive that won't solve anything, his efforts in the COVID-19 outbreak has been nothing but a chain of failures that is likely to continue. As the President of the United States, your job is to guide the American citizens to success and prosperity, not to drag them down with harmful suggestions and false information.
