Could It Happen Here?

Readying To Resist?

It's very rare that an idea really sticks in my head for long. For one to expand into a full-fledged plan are all the more rare The idea of me resisting the 'Corporate State' that would likley be created out of a 2012 GOP victory falls into that second category.

I guess one reason that this idea has 'legs' is that I have a basic knowledge of HTML, so the first stage of this 'Boot Camp' would be to re-learn the basics of HTML. With the basics of web page construction refreshed in my mind, I'd work on some of the more advanced topics of page development.

With development out of the way, I'd move on to design. I'd take what HTML I've learned and use to develop the Cascading Style Sheets that are the basis of the modern web page.

With this knowledge, I would begin the development of 'American Vendetta'. The name designed to conjure the spirit of resistance that permeated 'V For Vendetta'. The site would be on the order of BuzzFlash or CommonDreams, relying heavily on multimedia content. One of the more ambitious ideas would be a sorts of 'weekly rewind' of Rick Smith's working-class driven talk show. I'd also do my own content; videos, podcasts, etc.

To do a site like this would require space, and getting that space would require a unique, and possibly extreme, solution. What I see perhaps being necessary is building an 'Opera House'. There's a web browser called Opera that has an add on called Unite. What Unite does, is allow the browser to act as small server. What I could see doing is building a computer to run Opera, Unite and store the files that would make up the site.

Of course, if we're going to try and defeat the idea of an America of, by, and for the corporation, we need to have a vision of something to replace it with. I think I have found an alternative vision in the idea of 'Land Value Capture'. Once I get my final IT certification passed, I'll start the course towards getting a certification in this theory.

This all may lead to a job with a Union or other group working for social and economic justice, and might be what in the back of mind I'm looking to do.

Update (May 2012)

Just thought I'd update this project a bit. While I was updating the Opera Browser that Unite runs under, I found out that Opera plans to "sunset" Unite.

Undaunted, I have found what looks like a decent free webhosting site that offers the option to upgrade to low-cost ($5.00/month) hosting. I also may have found a way to do a weekly on-line radio show This also means that I may merely need to upgrade the computer I have or start from an empty case.

Finally, the idea of turning the laptop into a sort of "zombie", that would have BIOS only, and run TAILS Linux from a USB stick might be explored.

Update (August 2012)

I'm working on learning HTML5, etc. I do have an account on a free hosting site, but I haven't done much with it, I've probably forgotten the password even.

I'm also thinking that no matter what happens in November, this portal needs to be set up. It may be a sorta "work in progress" for the first few months of its existence.

Finally, since my current PC needs a new motherboard. I'm thinking of just using that to start over.

Update (Nov 2012)

Looks like I might have found a fun way to get my coding chops back in time to build this.

The web portal "Good" is running a coding contest. Might as well give it a roll. . . .
