Wastage of Water: A Muddle
Life and Water:
“And We made every living thing from water” (AL-QURAN 21:30)
About more than 1400 years ago in HOLY QURAN it was mentioned that living things are made of water. From here we can conclude that synonym for “Life” is “Water”. We use water in our every daily life activity. Water is the finest Liquid it is used almost in everything. We use water for washing activities, we use water in our vehicles, we Drink water to survive, for construction of new buildings water is required. And water provides us food as aquatic life is all dependent on water. Water only exists on earth; in the whole universe only earth is the planet where water exists out of billions of planets and stars.
Water covers about 72% of total Earth’s surface, that means approximately 326 million cubic miles or 1.3 billion cubic kilometers of earth is covered by water. The amount of water has always remained constant on earth. It’s kept constant by nature. The amount of water present today on earth is all equal to amount of water present thousands of years ago. It never got decreased nor increased.
Wasting Water:
According to a study an average family wastes 180 gallons per week. At average about 900 billion gallons of water is wasted through drainage from homes. One gallon of water is equal to 3.8 liters. This concludes that about 3406 billion liters of water is wasted per year just by local people. If we add the amount of water being wasted by our industries the number will increase merely.
China, India, USA and Brazil are the countries ranked top 4 in wasting water, all are 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th most populated countries in the world respectively. Isn’t it a “Muddle”?
Cutting off the Nose to Spite the Face:
Wasting of water is very common in this modern era which is quite shocking. Though some countries in the world are reusing and filtering the used water to make it drinkable even after use. But majority of the world is doing almost nothing to treat this major issue. This is resulting in major issues like water scarcity, limited water in rural areas and brine.
“Do not waste water even if you were at a running stream” (Prophet Muhammad PBUH)
Prophet MUHAMMAD PBUH has told us 1400 years ago not to waste water even if you have great amount of it. But we’re doing almost nothing to save or store fresh water. In some of Asian countries we have such areas where people drink and use water from sumps. That means they use dirty water to cook food, to drink and to wash. And it results in a lot of new and untreatable diseases and also in poor health conditions.
Importance of Fresh Water:
Fresh water is a blessing and a gift for us from the nature. A normal human being can survive for 7 to 8 days without water. Plants require water for photosynthesis. If we kept wasting it with the same average we will run out of the fresh water. The water will become saline and we will lose our chances to survive as well as we will lose the aquatic life. We will have no water for irrigation or agriculture. In short there will be no life left on earth.
What Should We Do Now?
We should save water as more as we can. We should adopt such methods which can help us to reduce the percentage of water being wasted; following are some methods which can help us:
- Filter water from kitchens and make it drinkable.
- Use good quality pipes and sewerage systems to avoid leaks.
- Use soapy waters from wash basins for toilet flushes.
- Use water saving showers.
- Save water in the garden.
- Recycle Water.
- Save water in washing car .
- Celebrate water day.
The above are very few examples of some mature nations who know the value of this gift from nature. And they’re setting examples for us so that the whole world should start to think about it and save our green earth from being lifeless.
