What Emo Really Is

Updated on December 17, 2016

For all the non emo's out there. Look I know people now just assume emo's are depressed people who listen to dark music wear black and cut themselves. In reality some of those things are true but you don't need that to be emo. Being emo means a lot of things so in this I will be explaining my struggles in being a misunderstood emo and what we really are. Ok so me being emo started about a year and a half ago when I first got into My Chemical Romance. Then after that I started listen to other bands such as Panic! At The Disco Black Veil Brides Muse Twenty One Pilots and Fall Out Boy. Then after that I started wearing the bands shirts from Hot Topic and the black skinny jeans. So I had come except the fact that I was emo. So everything was fine with that until my second year of cross country started. That's when people started calling out that I was not emo because I had friends and did a sport and did not cut myself. The fact that people think that you need to be those things to be emo is complete fucking bullshit. Being emo can mean a lot of things but here are some of the big ones. Being in touch with your feelings is a big one emos can often be very emotional and are very in touch with our feelings so that often means we care very much for other people and do anything we can to help other people. The fact is like I said we feel things very deeply and that's why we listen to music so much. The pop punk emotional lyrics help us be strong through tough times its also nice to hear someone who has gone through something similar to you giving you advice through their music. The thing that disappointed me when I looked into what normal people think emo's are is the fact that they think we need to fucking cut ourselves or be suicidal to be emo! Hurting yourself and thinking about killing yourself is not something to take lightly. I'm saying this because I have had friends who have cut themselves and one attempted to commit suicide. Its a difficult thing to stand by and watch. So i'm just saying hurting yourself is not emo its a serious problem that can not be taken lightly like some people take it. So I hope this helps some of you normal people understand a bit more about emo's and I hope in the future you treat us a little more kindly. Just because we are different does not mean we are not people. One final message to my fellow emo's out there. You are not alone in this world no matter how much it feels like it. Do something like this share your feelings lets let the world know who we are!
