What to Do About Homelessness in America

Updated on December 18, 2018

Homelessness

Homelessness, People down on their luck. Rummaging through trash bins or panhandling. Some even working jobs and sleeping in cars. Homelessness is a serious concern in America, And over the next ten years. Its set to get a lot worst with increasing poverty, sluggish earnings, and economic strains.

Comforts to Homelessness

Today the comforts of a home seem out of reach for some. For others, They are one or two paycheck away from being on the street. With Snap and other social services feeling the pinch. Seem some will never receive the help they truly need. The statistics on the homeless population is often skewed. The government doesn't really know how many there are, estimating around a bit over five hundred thousand. But numbers are much higher than that. However, the only ones that are counted are the one that reports it or seeks help for the issue of being homeless.

Mistreatment of the Homeless

People have been known to abuse the homeless. From verbal to physical even murdering the homeless.
One homeless man by the name of Julio Edeza who was with a friend outside a Rite Aid store in Oak Park, CA April 17, 2016, was set on fire with racing fuel. He survived and the suspect was charged and given 4 life sentences. James Heffernan another homeless man out of Tampa Florida was also set on fire, except tragically he did not survive.
In Europe homeless spikes to prevent the homeless from sleeping on benches and under areas. Police in America knocking over tents and firing water cannons.
The human rights violations of the homeless stretch all over the globe. But why is it that people hate or dislike the homeless?

Why do people hate or dislike the homeless?

In short, The answer is because they don't understand the people who are homeless or why they are homeless. Some believe it because they are lazy good for nothing in a society that just want to eat off the plates of others and give nothing back. However, turns out too often this isn't the case at all. With many of the working several jobs.

How do people become homeless?

Well, There are all sorts of reasons why people become homeless. Incarceration is one issue that plagues a large number of them. Felons that can't get a job so they end up homeless with nothing.
I think one of the most interesting ways some people become homeless is growing up in foster care from CPS custody or grew up as orphans. Turns out the government fails a lot of these children.

Homeless Youth

Many of the videos and information are scrapped from search engines hiding this dark secret from public view.
Some people fall on hard times, One payment turns into another payment and overdue payments pile up and they end up on the streets. There are people that have grown up in toxic families with narcissistic sociopath parents and family members. There is a long never ending list of possibilities, This just goes to name a few, Including drug problems and alcoholism

Homeless drugs, alcohol, suicides, depression and mental health.

Lots of homeless people have drugs and alcohol problems along with depression and mental health issues. Opioid addiction, Heroine addiction, crystal meth, cocaine fentanyl and many other forms of drug addiction. Often not receiving the help they need. Family and society have all but given up on most of them. Many of their condition so bad that they have become completely unhelpable.
Suffering from severe depression and mental disorders. Castaway lonely confused and forgotten. There are many homeless that commit suicide.
Some of them even children.
This is a statistical quote from Healio Psychiatric annals.

"Overall, 4,594 children and teenagers experienced family homelessness. Of these, 42% reported high levels of emotional distress (adjusted OR = 2; 95% CI, 1.9-2.1), 29.1% reported self-injury (aOR = 2.52; 95% CI, 2.34–2.69), 21% reported suicidal ideation (aOR = 2.3; 95% CI, 2.14–2.48) and 9.3% reported attempting suicide within the past year (aOR = 3.24; 95% CI, 2.91–3.6)".

A sad and troubling statistic.
So how can we help all these people?
