Errah is a writer, a technician and an educator. He often writes passionately about flags, unraveling their history and symbolism.

In this article, I will showcase flags that eagles. Eagles are large birds of prey known for their powerful talons and hooked beaks. They belong to the family Accipitridae which is comprised of more than 60 species including Philippine eagle, Harpy eagle and Steller's sea eagle, the top three largest eagles in the world.

This article will include not only national flags that feature these predators but also flags from other areas, such as city flags, historical flags, state flags, and other flags that created by various people or organizations. In the whole world there are 6 countries that use national flags with eagles plus 3 other countries have mythical eagles on them, all are listed below. I will begin by discussing these national flags, explaining the significance of the eagles depicted on them. Afterward, I will showcase other flags from around the world that also feature these birds of prey.

National Flags That Feature Eagles:

Banner of Egypt

1. Egypt

The national flag of Egypt is comprised of horizontal tricolor stripes of red, white, and black. In the center of the white stripe, there is a golden Egyptian coat of arms in which an Eagle of Saladin is displayed. The Eagle of Saladin is a stylized eagle icon, which is also found in the heraldic emblems of other Arab countries. The eagle has a shield on its chest, and its talons hold a scroll inscribed with "Arab Republic of Egypt" in Arabic characters. It represents strength, connections, and unity in the Arab world.

2. Kazakhstan

The flag of Kazakhstan is a reminiscence of the daytime sky. It has a sky-blue field with a golden sun and a soaring golden steppe eagle in the center. The eagle symbolizes the nation's freedom and independence. Its image on the flag also represents the unique wildlife and natural beauty of the country. On the hoist side, there is a traditional national pattern called a koshkar-muiz, adding to the beauty of the flag's design.

Banner of Mexico

3. Mexico

The Mexican flag consists of three vertical stripes of green, white, and red, arranged from left to right. At the center of the white stripe, an image of the Mexican national coat of arms is displayed. The national coat of arms is comprised of an eagle eating a snake while perched on a prickly pear cactus. This design is based on the Aztec legend of the founding of Tenochtitlán (now Mexico City), where the gods told the Aztecs to build their city where they found a cactus where an eagle devours a snake. This image also symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, as for the Aztecs, the eagle symbolizes power, kindness and freedom, while the snake embodies darkness and evil.

Banner of Moldova

4. Moldova

The flag of Moldova consists of an equal vertical triband of blue, yellow, and red, arranged from left to right. In the center of the yellow band, there is the Moldovan national coat of arms. The coat of arms features an eagle holding an olive branch and a scepter with its talons, a cross held in its beak, and a shield on its chest. The shield has the head of an ox, along with a star, a crescent, and a rose. All accessories of the eagle, except the shield and olive branch, are depicted in gold. The color symbolizes the wealth and the richness of the country.

The eagle itself symbolizes Moldova's cultural and historical ties to Roman civilization, as it was a prominent emblem of the Roman Empire where eagles were often used as a military symbol. It represented authority, strength, and the unbreakable spirit of the empire.

5. Zambia

The flag of Zambia is made up of a green background with three vertical stripes of red, black, and orange in the lower right corner, and above those stripes is an orange African fish eagle. The African fish eagle is the national bird of Zambia. It was chosen because of its importance to the country's geography and culture. Its distinctive call and striking appearance are well known in the region. It might symbolize the people's ability to rise above challenges. It also represents freedom and hope for a brighter future.

6. Zimbabwe

The flag of Zimbabwe consists of seven horizontal stripes and a white triangle on the hoist side. The color arrangement of the stripes is symmetrical from the center outward. At the center is a black stripe, flanked on each side by yellow (or gold), then red, and finally green stripes, in that order from the middle to the top and bottom. as follows: black represents the Black people of Africa; red stands for the bloodshed of those who sacrificed their lives for the country's independence; yellow symbolizes the nation's mineral wealth; and green represents agriculture and the country's rich vegetation.

Inside the white triangle on Zimbabwe’s flag is a red five-pointed star, and in front of it is a famous symbol called the Zimbabwe Bird. It sits on a pedestal. The species of the bird is actually unknown, but some suggest it could be a bateleur eagle or an African fish eagle. The design is taken from stone carvings discovered at the archaeological site in the ancient city of Great Zimbabwe. Some people think the bird was a sacred symbol, possibly linked to religion or local traditions.
