I honestly dont think Canada is given near the respect that it deserves ( I live in the US so I dont know of how its seen in other countries).
I use to live in North Dakota, right near the border and would visit friends there as much as possible.

I also live in the US, and have heard lots of wonderful things about living in Canada. I'm in Wyoming, so not overly far from the border, and get to talk to a lot of people who either moved here from Canada, are traveling from there, or who have recently visited. My husband has a list of places in Canada that he'd love for me to visit -- he used to live in Michigan and played hockey all over Canada -- and I have a number of friends around Yellow Knife who have urged me to move there and put my sled dog handling experience to work tongue. I can't speak for what people elsewhere say about Canada, but I've certainly never heard anything negative about it.

I've never lived there but have friends that did and I've visited numerous times and I love Canada. In fact last fall I went to Maine and drove up the coast to Nova Scotia it was beautiful and very friendly. One time while visiting Toronto in the 70's I was harassed for wearing american flag shoes, that was the only bad thing that ever happened there. (and I think the guy just didn't get the point of the shoes)
