What happens with a growing population coupled to a shrinking job market?
Not a good situation. It means stagnant or growing unemployment People have to find other ways to make a living, or if they can't then it could lead to social unrest.
The demographics in the U.S. should shift in favor of job seekers in coming years, as millions of baby boomers retire and open up positions. However, there is a big skills gap between what employers need and what employees have to offer, which means workers need to retrain.
