A Conflict of Interest?

On the local news tonight, it was mentioned that 5 of the Democratic contenders for the 2020 election are Senators, and that they will have to leave the campaign trail to participate in the expected impeachment trial.

Is it possible that we will not only allow, but expect, Trump's primary opponents to "sit on the bench", so to speak, in a trial of impeachment?  It would seem impossible to find a bigger conflict of interest than to allow these people to vote on removing him from office...and his candidacy in the election they hope to win.

    Comments?

Lol, it's such a cut throat ugly bussiness.
A front row seat to the greatest freak show in the World. Trump brought this to a new level.

Do you think it's fine for Moscow Mitch to say he's coordinating with the WH for the Senate trial? Is that a conflict of interest?

I don't know - I don't know how the circus will be run.  Is Mitch the only person on the "defense" side, or are you saying that there can be no "defense attorney" - that the witch hunt must continue with the sole goal of conviction rather than establishment of truth?

Since Moscow has already stated he will tow the president's line--he's already consulting with WH counsel--it will be interesting to see him take the oath of impartiality when the trial starts. That goes for Lindsay as well.

It isn't Mitch's job to be Trump's defense attorney. He's only one of many jurors who will take the same pledge of impartiality as all of the senators are sworn to.

Well, hopefully we will see a trial just as "fair" as the impeachment process was, when nothing not aimed at removing Trump from the next election was allowed to be considered.

If nothing indicating wrongdoing is allowed, the outcome seems pretty much pre-ordained, just as the outcome of the impeachment process was, right?  All fair and above board, right?

I also think those five Senators have a conflict of interest. Wouldn't it be impressive if one, (or all), of them stood up and said so? I think this would be a master-stroke of prestige for Biden—considering how he is tied to the impeachment accusations.

Impressive, yes...but I certainly hope they don't.  The shock would probably kill me, to see politicians on the right side of the moral fence!  Expire right at the keyboard, halfway through a word! big_smile

But you're right - it won't affect the outcome and would certainly be a feather in their hat.
