Free Rice

Updated on June 17, 2014

Free Rice

Free Rice is a webpage that allows users to support the World Food Programme. It does this by offering multiple choice quizzes on a subject of the users choice; for every correct answer 10 grains of rice are donated. These grains of rice are paid for by an ad displayed on the page with a correct answer, it doesn't need to be clicked.

So how do I play?

Playing is quite easy. When you visit the page the first question is already up. They start off pretty easy, but get progressively more difficult as you get the answers correct. If you create an account, it will track your overall rice donations as well as remembering what level you are at in the quiz. The default subject is English vocabulary, but you can change the subject to challenge yourself in the subjects of art, math, geography and others as well.

Groups

Once you are registered on Free Rice, don't forget to join the Squidoo group so we can see how much rice we Squidoo members have donated!

My Favorite Categories

While the classic English vocabulary quizzes are still my favorite, I also enjoy testing myself in some of the other categories. The Grammar subject only has 5 levels, so that I outgrew rather quickly. It has been along time since I was in high school, so I was surprised how poorly I initially did on the Geography questions. Luckily I started improving as I played for a while. I am currently trying to expand my French Language vocabulary, so I was excited to see this category. I am consistently in the top level in it though, so hopefully they will add new words and levels to it soon. A subject that keeps me pretty challenged is the Famous Paintings subject. I know a few of them, but probably should know more. I am just playing for entertainment and self improvement. A student taking courses in any of these subjects probably would have a differing opinion.

FreeRice is a great way for teens to work on Vocabulary in preparation for the SAT's while helping to alleviate world hunger.
