Zara Philips & Mike Tindall - Favorite Royal Couple
British Royal Family - Zara and Mike
I can already hear some people asking .... who? Have you heard of them?
I know - to be suitably snobbishly British for a moment - that Zara and Mike aren't exactly regal names and neither is a prince or princess but nevertheless, they are my favorite royal couple.
Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge are the popular, glitzy couple who are invariably in the news, but I like these two - who are down to earth in the best possible way.
Just before Kate gave birth to Prince George, a new heir to the British throne, Zara and Mike revealed that they too were expecting a baby in early 2014.
Mia Grace was born on 17th January, 2014.For some people, this was the first time that they had even heard of this couple and yet she is the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth and the daughter of Princess Anne, the Princess Royal.
They are both experts in their own fields in the sporting world. She, taking after her mother, is an Olympic equestrian and he is a rugby player - both sports have a reputation for requiring stamina, a high level of fitness and ... toughness. The royal babyZara gave birth to a daughter on 17th January, 2014. The baby is the Queen's fourth great-grandchild.
You really do have to be one tough lady to compete in sports like this.
Just a few days before her pregnancy was announced, Zara was competing in an event as, as happens, took a fall. This led to a media outcry - should a woman in early pregnancy be even riding a horse? Let alone competing in a tough and dangerous sport?
She said it was perfectly fine and her gynecologist, surely one of the top in the land, agreed with her. She is a good role model for today's young women some of whom, I'm afraid, prefer to be pampered during their pregnancies! She is down-to-earth in exactly the same way as her mother. Princess Anne.
ANNE, THE GRANDMOTHER
In the early seventies, Anne and her husband were attacked at gunpoint when traveling in their car. The gunman, who shot and injured three men during the event, demanded that Princess Anne get out of the car. How typical of her it was when she looked at him, and the gun, and said 'Not bloody likely.' She was also very fond of telling reporters who were hounding her to 'naff off'. Of course, 'naff' is a euphemism....
I have always liked Princess Anne. She refused to 'play the princess' and even within the confines of the palace, went her own way doing her own thing. When she married the commoner who was to become the father of her children, she refused when the Queen offered to give him a regal title. Her children therefore (there is also a son called Peter) do not have titles even though they are in line to the throne.
No-one doubts that rugby players are pretty tough guys but I'll tell you why I think Mike is special and before I go any further, I'll admit that I'm biased.
He is a Yorkshireman.
To many people (especially others who are like me and from Yorkshire) that says it all! In fact, he was educated at the same school as my son - a very strong rugby school known for breeding tough guys!
Another thing I like about him is that he obviously has a hard time conforming to the 'political correctness' that the royal family needs to pay attention to these days. I imagine that he gets on like a house on fire with his mother-in-law Anne, and his wife's grandfather, the outspoken Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Mike is well-known for liking a drink and liking a laugh - in fact, he's a good Yorkshire lad all round!
During his rugby career, from which he recently retired, his achievements include being the captain of the England rugby team. Plus, despite his (now) broken nose, he's really a cute guy :) When the pregnancy was announced, he expressed the hope that the baby would inherit his wife's nose, and not his own.
The new baby
Who knows what the new baby will grow up to be like? But these are factors to bear in mind
- A strong character. Both parents are fun, amusing people who definitely follow their own paths in life.
- A sport attitude. The child will be brought up living, breathing and eating sports. I expect him or her to attend a rugby or equestrian event within a few days of being born.
- Good looks. Mike's broken nose notwithstanding, the parents are both attractive people. Evidently, Mike's nose has been broken at least eight times - this is not uncommon for a rugby player.
- A great physique. Although the couple look terrific on formal occasions, they are not clotheshorses. But they are both in great shape.
- An unconventional attitude. Within the confines of the family, the child's mother, grandmother and great-grandfather have been particularly outspoken.
The line of succession
The British Royal Family is a fascinating subject and this history is quite astonishing. The new baby will have blue blood mixed with a healthy dose of good, down-to-earth Yorkshire blood too. I have great hopes for this child! Learn more about the baby's ancestry.
Royal baby timeline
January 23rd, 2014
It has been announced that the baby's name is Mia Grace. What do you think?
January 17th, 2014
Zara gave birth to baby girl. The name is yet to be announced.
Zara became godmother to Prince George.
Zara is living life to the full and obviously enjoying her pregnancy very much.(And I'm not surprised - it's a very special time). Recent reports have shown her dressed as a flapper for a vintage-style event and wearing a stylish outfit as she visited a local maternity unit - not in preparation, but to help them celebrate their 60th anniversary. But I can't help wondering when the baby is due. The official word was 'in the New Year' but I suspect, looking at that baby bump, that it could be before then.
27 August 2013
I'm happy to report that Zara isn't sitting back during this waiting time. It was announced today that she is supporting a British campaign to increase the number of women engineers. Amazingly, only 13% of engineering students in UK universities are women. She's even more my favorite royal now that I know that her mother is the patron of the Women in Science and Engineering organization.
3 August 2013
Despite the news last month that Zara would not be riding in events until after her child is born, she did in fact take part in a dressage event this weekend.
17 July 2013
It has been announced that Zara has competed in enough events this year to ensure her places in 2014 competitions. Therefore she has chosen to take part in no more competitive events until after the birth. With her places in 2014 assured, there is no need for her to compete this year. I'm sure however that she will still be riding on a regular but non-competitive basis.
15 July 2013
Although she is now showing her baby bump, Zara took part in a charity polo match; riding with her usual verve. The online newspaper that reported this claimed that her mother, Princess Anne, rode until six weeks before the birth of her own children.Newspapers are reporting that she is three months pregnant. And sporting a bump already? I suspect that the pregnancy is a little further advanced...
